Redskins qualify for districts in 3 positions

Wapakoneta Redskins senior Rachel Roberts and junior Kaitlin Snider each won three singles matches to qualify for districts, while juniors Kiersten Wellons and Chelsea Myers reached the district doubles tournament Thursday at sectionals.

The Redskins qualified for districts in three different positions Thursday after the first day of competition in a Division I Northwest District girls tennis sectional tournament in Findlay.

Trojans top Rockets for 1st time in history

ANNA -— As the Botkins Trojans gradually built their lead Thursday against the Anna Rockets, they kept their composure for the most part, knowing they were on the verge of doing what they were about to do.

By the match’s end, Botkins’ celebrations ensued before the handshake line formed, and after the two teams shook hands, the Botkins players were absolutely ecstatic about what they just accomplished.

Shelby Kohler was the first individual in Wapakoneta Redskins girls golf program history to reach the district tournament level in 2011.

Two years later she will lead the first team in school history to reach districts, in Wapak’s eighth season as a girls golf program.

The Redskins took second place Wednesday in a Division I Northwest District sectional tournament at Sycamore Springs Golf Club in Arlington.

Top three teams advanced from Wednesday’s sectional to the district tournament next Tuesday.

Wapakoneta to face stingy Bulldogs team

For the second straight week, the Wapakoneta Redskins will be facing a team in good standing with respect to the high school football playoffs.

The Redskins will make a trip north Friday to take on the Defiance Bulldogs (3-2) in a Western Buckeye League contest starting the second half of the regular season.

Wapakoneta owns the second spot in Division III, Region 10, in the latest computer ratings, while Defiance is ranked sixth in Division III, Region 8.

Redskins shoot season high in sectional tournament

The Wapakoneta Redskins shot a season-high 360 at sectionals Tuesday.

Wapak placed 11th out of 18 schools at the Division I Northwest District boys golf sectional tournament at Stone Ridge Golf Club in Bowling Green.

Wapak’s season ended Tuesday with its sectional finish.

“The conditions were tough,” Wapak varsity coach Kenny Wayman said. “There was a lot of wind, and the greens were slick. When you have that combination, it’s tough to score.”

Wapakoneta completes 1st ever unbeaten season

With a 5-0 win over the Ada Bulldogs, the Wapakoneta Redskins completed the first undefeated season in program history Tuesday, finishing the 2013 season with a 16-0 record in match play during the regular season.

The unbeaten mark punctuated an already accomplished season which saw Wapak go 9-0 in Western Buckeye League matches, take first at the WBL tournament and clinch the WBL championship for 2013.

Redskins vault to 2nd place in region

The Wapakoneta Redskins, after their win Friday over the previously unbeaten Celina Bulldogs, vaulted to second place in their region Tuesday as the Ohio High School Athletic Association released the second version of the weekly high school football computer ratings.

Wapakoneta (4-1) has won three straight games and sits behind only Mount Orab Western Brown in Division III, Region 10.

The Redskins were sixth in the region in the first ratings release Sept. 24.

Wapakoneta ties St. Marys in WBL showdown

Knowing only a win would help their cause, the Wapakoneta Redskins were disappointed in Monday’s outcome.

The host Redskins played to a scoreless tie, 0-0, against their rival and league leader St. Marys Roughriders in Western Buckeye League varsity boys soccer action at Ryan Field.

Wapak remained one win behind St. Marys in the league standings after Monday’s match, as the Redskins moved to 4-0-3 in the WBL, while St. Marys stood at 5-0-2.

Both teams have two matches remaining in league play this season.

Wapakoneta nets 1st WBL title since 2001

The Wapakoneta Redskins won three of the five brackets at the Western Buckeye League girls tennis tournament Saturday to clinch the WBL title for the 2013 season.

Wapak won the tournament which concluded Saturday and previously went 9-0 in league matches during the regular season. The combination gave the Redskins their first WBL championship since 2001.
