Redskins vault to 2nd place in region

The Wapakoneta Redskins, after their win Friday over the previously unbeaten Celina Bulldogs, vaulted to second place in their region Tuesday as the Ohio High School Athletic Association released the second version of the weekly high school football computer ratings.

Wapakoneta (4-1) has won three straight games and sits behind only Mount Orab Western Brown in Division III, Region 10.

The Redskins were sixth in the region in the first ratings release Sept. 24.

Wapakoneta ties St. Marys in WBL showdown

Knowing only a win would help their cause, the Wapakoneta Redskins were disappointed in Monday’s outcome.

The host Redskins played to a scoreless tie, 0-0, against their rival and league leader St. Marys Roughriders in Western Buckeye League varsity boys soccer action at Ryan Field.

Wapak remained one win behind St. Marys in the league standings after Monday’s match, as the Redskins moved to 4-0-3 in the WBL, while St. Marys stood at 5-0-2.

Both teams have two matches remaining in league play this season.

Wapakoneta nets 1st WBL title since 2001

The Wapakoneta Redskins won three of the five brackets at the Western Buckeye League girls tennis tournament Saturday to clinch the WBL title for the 2013 season.

Wapak won the tournament which concluded Saturday and previously went 9-0 in league matches during the regular season. The combination gave the Redskins their first WBL championship since 2001.

Redskins' runners win boys Kalida meet

The Wapakoneta Redskins occupied spots four through six as they won the Kalida Wildcat Invitational on Saturday in high school cross country action.

Dylan Plaugher (4th; 17 minutes, 21.1 seconds), Sam Harrod (17:25.20) and Will Zofkie (17:32.7) accounted for Wapak’s first three finishers in the top six, as the Redskins took first place with 51 points in a field of 15 teams and 144 runners.

Wapakoneta edges Celina with late go-ahead TD

Faced with a 4th-and-32, the Wapakoneta Redskins needed a miracle to keep their drive and Homecoming victory hopes alive, and they got one.

On the long fourth down conversion, Wapak senior running back Zach Schmerge made a 42-yard catch and run on a screen pass from quarterback Kodi Morgan, weaving his way through Celina defenders behind a wall of Wapak offensive linemen.

The conversion led to a go-ahead touchdown late in the fourth quarter Friday in their 29-26 win over the previously unbeaten Celina Bulldogs.

Fort Loramie offense throttles Waynesfield-Goshen

WAYNESFIELD — It was a homecoming game that many Waynesfield-Goshen fans just as soon forget, as the Fort Loramie Redskins dominated the W-G Tigers, 63-7, in a Northwest Central Conference varsity football contest Friday.

Perhaps the only mercy shown was the reduction in time to eight minutes for the final two quarters.

Redskins stung early in loss to Yellow Jackets

A less than ideal start put the Wapakoneta Redskins in what proved to be too big of a hole Thursday against the visiting Sidney Yellow Jackets.

The host Redskins trailed 3-0 with 17:27 before halftime and did not recover in their 3-1 loss Thursday in a non-league varsity boys soccer match at Ryan Field.

The loss came in Wapak’s final match before its big Western Buckeye League showdown Monday against the St. Marys Roughriders.

Wapakoneta aims to knock Celina off top of WBL

The Wapakoneta Redskins will look to put Celina where they are after Friday’s game — behind Kenton in the Western Buckeye League football standings, as Wapakoneta will host the Celina Bulldogs in a big WBL contest Friday at Harmon Field.

Kenton and Celina are each 2-0 in the WBL entering Friday. Wapak, meanwhile, is 1-1, with a loss to Kenton in the league opener.

Redskins debut 6th in computer ratings

The Wapakoneta Redskins debuted sixth in their region Tuesday, as the first weekly edition of the high school football computer ratings were released by the Ohio High School Athletic Association.

Wapak (3-1) owns 6.0 computer points in Division III, Region 10 as of Tuesday.

After 10 games, the top eight teams in each region from Divisions II through VII will qualify for the playoffs, while the top 16 teams from Division I will make the playoffs.

Redskins outlast Ottawa-Glandorf, win by 1 goal

Though they are essentially out of contention for the league title, the Wapakoneta Redskins enjoyed handing the Ottawa-Glandorf Titans the same fate Monday, as Wapak edged O-G in a Western Buckeye League varsity girls soccer game, 3-2, at Ryan Field.

The Redskins held onto a 2-1 lead for 25 minutes, since just before halftime.
