Botkins boys, girls advance to regionals

The Botkins Trojans will make a bus trip Troy this coming Saturday after qualifying to regionals this past Saturday at the district level.

The Trojans were third out of nine schools Saturday in a Division III Southwest District boys cross country race at Miami Valley Career Technology Center in Clayton.

Botkins was one of the top four teams qualifying to regionals Saturday.

Wapakoneta freshman Zokfie qualifies to regionals

Allie Zofkie will be the lone representative of Wapakoneta High School at the regional cross country level, as the freshman qualified from districts Saturday.

The Wapakoneta Redskins finished ninth overall out of 11 teams in a Division I Northwest District girls cross country meet at Pearson Metro Park in Oregon.

The top four teams advanced from districts Saturdays, and the top 16 individuals not on qualifying teams also advanced.

Trojans win sectional after penalty kicks

The Botkins Trojans won a sectional championship Saturday in a shootout.

Botkins prevailed 4-3 over the Casstown Miami East Vikings in a Division III Southwest District boys soccer sectional final in Casstown.

The win advanced Botkins to the district level.

After a 1-1 tie after regulation and two scoreless, 15-minute overtime periods, the match turned to penalty kicks to determine the winner.

After six kickers, Botkins prevailed with four goals to three.

Redskins handle St. Marys with sub at QB

Sporting a replacement quarterback, the Wapakoneta Redskins landed three long touchdown passes to distance themselves on the scoreboard when Friday’s game was its closest.

Having seen the winless St. Marys Roughriders cut Wapak’s lead to 13-7 in the second quarter, the Redskins responded with three straight Aaron Huffman passes to Keaton Metz, one before halftime and two more to start the third quarter.

Riverside runs through Tigers defense

The Waynesfield-Goshen Tigers were overwhelmed early in Friday’s game, as their opponent, the Riverside Pirates, used a potent rushing attack to record with a 27-0 halftime advantage.

Riverside had three scoring plays of 20 yards or longer in the first half, and the Pirates eventually posted 438 yards rushing in Friday’s contest, a 40-8 win over the Tigers in a Northwest Central Conference varsity football game.

The loss put the Tigers at 2-6 this season, after winning two games entering Friday following an 0-5 start.

St. Marys scores 4 straight to beat Wapakoneta

CELINA — The St. Marys Roughriders overcame a 2-0 deficit about as quickly as a team can, as they finally broke through on the scoreboard midway through the second half and scored four times in fewer than 9 minutes.

The furious rally gave the Roughriders a 4-2 win Thursday over the Wapakoneta Redskins in a Division II Northwest District girls soccer sectional championship at Celina High School, in a contest between the two rival schools and Western Buckeye League foes.

Celina eliminates Redskins from tournament

LIMA — The Wapakoneta Redskins improved from their first match this season against the Celina Bulldogs but their effort Thursday was still not enough to gain a win.

Celina beat Wapak in three games Thursday in a Division II Northwest District volleyball sectional semifinal at Lima Senior High School in Lima.

Celina soundly defeated Wapak in three games during the two teams’ Western Buckeye League match Sept. 19, with scores of 25-10, 25-15 and 25-11.

Celina was the co-champion of the WBL this season.

Trojans lose late in double overtime

The Botkins Trojans held off the Casstown Miami East Vikings as long as they could Thursday but a Vikings’ goal with three minutes left in the second overtime ended the match, giving Miami East a 1-0 victory in a Division IV Southwest District girls soccer sectional championship in Casstown.

The two teams played scoreless through 80 regulation minutes and 15 minutes in the first overtime before the Vikings’ winning goal surfaced from a rebound off of a direct kick.

Irish handle Botkins in sectional final

The Springfield Catholic Central Irish were too much for the Botkins Trojans in their 3-0 win Thursday in a Division IV Southwest District volleyball sectional championship, played at Tippecanoe High School in Tipp City.

The Irish had winning scores of 25-12, 25-9 and 25-13.

Catholic Central (23-1) was Division IV’s eighth-ranked team in the Ohio High School Volleyball Coaches Association poll released Monday.

The loss Thursday ended Botkins’ season with a 8-16 record.

Wapakoneta looks to keep St. Marys winless

Doug Frye can be counted as one who is surprised the St. Marys Roughriders are still winless this season.

The fourth-year Wapakoneta Redskins varsity football coach says his former team is much better this season than last season’s 0-10 St. Marys squad.

“This is a good football team,” Frye said of St. Marys. “Easily this team could have three or four wins at this point in the season.
