Redskins hosting speedy Shawnee in 1st round

A feeling of excitement is flowing through the Wapakoneta schools’ football program right now, and that excited feeling is peaking as the varsity squad is set to begin the playoffs Friday with the Redskins’ first home playoff game ever.

Wapakoneta varsity coach Doug Frye said the excitement is evident in the fact that the line of people at the high school to purchase tickets for Friday’s game was 60 yards in length as he was leaving Tuesday’s practice.

Wapakoneta not in final poll of season

The Wapakoneta Redskins did not appear in the final Associated Press poll of the season, which was released Monday.

The poll ranks the top 10 football teams in the state for each division and is voted upon by media members.

Wapakoneta (9-1) appeared twice in the Division III poll during the 2013 season, on Oct. 15 and 22, after receiving the minimum 12 points, although the team did not earn enough points either week to rank within the top 10.

W-G gets 7 players on All-NWCC teams

Seven members of the Waynesfield-Goshen Tigers football team appeared on the All-Northwest Central Conference teams, which were released Monday by the NWCC for the 2013 season.

The Tigers had three starters on defense each earn second-team honors, including sophomore Drew Lament (defensive line), junior Lucas Gray (linebacker) and junior Daniel Fridley (defensive back).

W-G junior Lake Turner was the conference’s second team punter.

Wapakoneta to play Shawnee in playoffs

The Wapakoneta Redskins officially clinched a playoff berth Sunday as the Ohio High School Athletic Association released the final computer ratings of the season, which determine playoff qualifiers and regional pairings.

Wapakoneta (9-1) will play the Springfield Shawnee Braves (9-1) at 7:30 p.m. Friday in a Division III, Region 10 quarterfinal at Harmon Field in Wapakoneta.

Botkins' Flora twins compete at state

The Flora twins, sophomores representing Botkins High School, competed in their first state cross country championships Saturday at National Trail Raceway in Hebron.

Chloe Flora, with a time of 20 minutes, 13.84 seconds, was the 51st finisher Saturday in a field of 142 runners in the Division III girls race.

She was 28th after the first mile and 30th after the second mile Saturday.

Flora concluded her season with a third-place finish at both the Shelby County Athletic League meet and at the district race in Clayton.

Wapakoneta to sell playoff tickets in advance

Playoff tickets for the Wapakoneta Redskins football game Friday, Nov. 8 at Harmon Field will be sold in advance of the game at Wapakoneta High School.

Reserved seats will be honored for the playoff game.

Reserved seat holders can purchase the same number of tickets they hold from 5:30-8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 5.

All reserved seat holders must purchase a ticket for this game and use their reserved seat card in order to get into the reserved seat section at game time.

Redskins cruise past Shawnee, clinch home field

SHAWNEE — A furious start allowed the Wapakoneta Redskins to finish their regular season on a high note Friday, and now they will move onto the playoffs for the second time in the last three seasons.

The Redskins cruised to a 49-0 halftime lead against the Shawnee Indians, with seven touchdowns in the first 19 minutes of Friday’s game, in a 49-13 win in Western Buckeye League varsity football action.

Troy Christian blanks W-G in season finale

The Waynesfield-Goshen Tigers were shut out, 35-0, by the Troy Christian Eagles in a non-league varsity football game Friday in Troy, in the regular season finale for both teams.

W-G ended its season with a 2-8 record.

After an 0-5 start, the Tigers won two games before losing three to finish the season.

Troy Christian finished 4-4 for the year.

TC sophomore running back Luke Dillahunt rushed for 246 yards on 11 carries and four touchdowns Friday.

OHSAA opposed to separate postseason tournaments

The state’s governing body of high school athletics is now publicly opposed to separating postseason tournaments between public and non-public schools, Ohio High School Athletic Association Commissioner Dan Ross wrote in a one-page memo dated Tuesday that was recently sent to member schools.

Wapakoneta, Shawnee heading in opposite directions

The two teams in Friday’s matchup are heading in opposite directions.

The Wapakoneta Redskins (8-1) have won seven consecutive games, have unofficially clinched a playoff berth and are virtually scoring at will.

The Shawnee Indians (2-7) have lost six straight games, have two wins against opponents with zero wins and are struggling to score points.

The two teams will meet Friday in Lima in the 2013 regular season finale for the varsity football year, in the ninth and final Western Buckeye League game.
