Frye resigns, expected to be St. Marys new coach

The man responsible for the best stretch of football in Wapakoneta Redskins history is stepping away from the program, and his next step might be to where he came to Wapakoneta from.

After four seasons, Doug Frye is resigning as head varsity football coach at Wapakoneta High School, which could lead to a possible return to the St. Marys Roughriders.

Superintendent Shawn Brown on Friday morning confirmed that Frye has been recommended to the St. Marys board of education to fill St. Marys Memorial High School’s open head varsity football coaching position.

Wapakoneta gets past Kalida in 2nd half

The Wapakoneta Redskins regrouped quickly after halftime after letting a first-half lead slip and cruised in the second-half to a 57-45 win over the Kalida Wildcats.

Wapak led 16-11 after the first period Saturday but Kalida made a run at the lead to trail by one, 27-26, at halftime.

Redskins varsity coach Rusty Allen explained his team’s adjustments for the second half which resulted in the double-digit win.

Redskins top Roughriders in WBL match

The Wapakoneta Redskins had a brief halt in their momentum Friday but they quickly rebounded in a 49-25 win over the St. Marys Roughriders in a Western Buckeye League varsity wrestling match at Wapakoneta High School.

The Redskins opened with a 6-0 lead after a pin by Jordan Kaeck against Eddie Reier at 132 pounds.

Trailing 1-0, Wapak’s Dylan Plaugher landed a reversal with 16.8 seconds left in the third period to give him a 2-1 win over Boston Hensley, giving Wapak a 9-0 lead.

Flyers win TSC title over Wapakoneta in 2OT

The TSC Holiday Tournament double-overtime championship game between the host Wapakoneta Redskins and the Marion Local Flyers featured a see-saw affair that saw the largest lead being seven points and only for a couple of minutes before it disappeared.

In the end, the Flyers managed to tie the game at 43 in the last minute of regulation and watch a shot by Redskin senior guard Sara Warner tumble off the rim with 3 seconds left.

Elida controls 3rd period in win over W-G

The Waynesfield-Goshen Tigers got a taste of some big-time competition Thursday on the opening night of the Vicki Mauk Holiday Invitational, hosted by Elida High School.

The young Tigers learned they are not quite ready to feel comfortable in a tournament atmosphere against bigger schools, as the Elida Bulldogs ran past the Tigers in the second half en route to a 70-57 victory Thursday in varsity girls basketball action.

The game was tied 23-23 at halftime, and then Elida owned the third period, outscoring W-G by a whopping 17 points.

Local teen to play in world baseball championships

A local student-athlete will trade the cold, brutal Ohio winter weather for a bit of warm temperatures in the Sunshine State this weekend.

Christian Hoskins, 16, of Wapakoneta, will be playing in a world baseball championship this weekend in Florida on a team of 15 players from throughout the United States, as he will be competing for Team Avenue Baseball in the Winter Wood Bat World Championships from Dec. 28-31. Each team is guaranteed to play a minimum of five games.

Hoskins is a junior at Botkins High School.

Kaeck’s big day leads Redskins to win over TC

Chandler Kaeck was the conference’s top bowler Saturday, as the Wapakoneta Redskins dominated in their win over the Temple Christian Pioneers.

Wapak won 3,079-1,915 in a West Ohio High School Bowling Conference varsity boys match Saturday at Northland Lanes in Lima.

Kaeck’s top score of 257 was the highest among conference bowlers Saturday, and his 241 average was the top one among WOHSBC bowlers who rolled two games.

Wapakoneta drops 2nd league match in row

The Wapakoneta Redskins are looking to regain health in a hurry because they are falling behind in the Western Buckeye League wrestling standings, possibly to the point already where they cannot win the regular season title.

The team took its second loss in league play Thursday in a 46-27 defeat to the Bath Wildcats and also landed a sound 55-12 win over the Elida Bulldogs in a WBL tri-match at Elida High School.

After watching the Elida Bulldogs dominate the style of play and scoreboard, Wapakoneta Redskin varsity coach Rusty Allen preached to his team to slow down, regain their composure and take over the tempo in the Western Buckeye League matchup.

Allen acknowledged there had to be nervous fans as the Bulldogs came out hot and scored on their first four possessions and hit 9-of-15 from the floor, but he was not one of them.

Wapakoneta falls away late in loss to Bluffton

BLUFFTON — A banked-in 3-pointer as time expired in the third period Tuesday all but deflated the Wapakoneta Redskins.

The triple put the Bluffton Pirates ahead by seven points, 36-29, entering the fourth period and proved to be enough of a cushion in the low-scoring affair.

Bluffton used the momentum from the buzzer-beater to more than double its margin by game’s end in a 57-41 win Tuesday over Wapakoneta in a non-league varsity boys basketball game in Pirate Gymnasium at Bluffton High School.
