BASEBALL: Wapak trio leads St. Marys Legion

June 7, 2011

ST. MARYS — The St. Marys Post 323 American Legion baseball team puts its trio of Wapakoneta grads right in the heart of its order and at the center of its hopes for success this summer.
As it opens the 2011 season, the trio of Greg Stoll, Dustin Gerlach and Kaleb Coil anchors Bill Shoffner’s team.
“We really don’t know all of our teammates yet, so it’s nice to have some teammates around,” Coil said. “Having two other guys who have big-game experience who played in a regional finals a couple years ago helps, too.”

TRACK: W-G relay wins state title

June 6, 2011

COLUMBUS — It was almost over before it had barely begun.
Now it is over.
And the Waynesfield-Goshen Tigers girls 400-meter relay team is the fastest in the land.
The Tigers erased the memory of an almost disastrous district preliminary race that could have ended their tournament run with a dominant performance in the Division III state final Saturday at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus.
W-G’s foursome of senior Abbey Gray, junior Morgan Horn, senior Frankie James and junior Ivy Horn was virtually flawless.
“Our handoffs were probably the best they’ve ever been,” Gray said.

TRACK NOTES: Horn faces familiar foes at state

June 6, 2011

COLUMBUS — Waynesfield-Goshen junior Ivy Horn is used to being at the front of the pack.
And after three straight trips to the Division III state track meet, she’s used to sharing the front with some familiar faces — Rittman’s Crystal Barber and Sidney Lehman’s Gretchen Walter.
Horn finished second in the 100 dash on Saturday with a time of 12.48, just .06 behind Walter and .01 ahead of Barber.
Then in the 200, she finished third with a 25.81 behind Barber (25.44) and Walter (25.64).
“I knew it was going to be me, Gretchen and Crystal up there,” Horn said.

Chase Culver picked up the win, throwing five shutout innings with four strikeouts, three walks and just two hits.
Wapak’s Alex Koch went 3 for 4 with a double, two runs, two RBIs and a stolen base.
Catcher Brandon Schreiber was 3-for-4 with a double, a run scored, one RBI and one stolen base. He also threw out three runners and allowed no stolen bases.

TRACK: Tigers strong on Day 1

June 3, 2011

COLUMBUS — The Waynesfield-Goshen Tigers track team had a solid day on the first day of the Division III state track meet Friday at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus.
The girls team scored its first points of the meet in the field-event finals thanks to a strong performance by senior Abbey Gray in the long jump.
Junior Ivy Horn advanced to the finals in three events but suffered a disappointing result in her fourth event.
And the boys team exceeded expectations, but came up short of placing in the finals of its two events.

FOOTBALL: Seven 'Skins in All-Star game

June 3, 2011

In this Oct. 22, 2010 file photo, Wapakoneta Redskins linebacker Zach Ferenbaugh (33) tackles Kenton Wildcats’ Kieran Fetter (11) as Wapak’s Royce Kantner (29) comes up on the play. Ferenbaugh and Kantner are two of seven Redskins players selected to play in the WBL vs. MAC/NWC All-Star Game on June 10 at Van Wert High School. They will be joined by Maverick Liles, Logan Erb, Cale Tabler, Alex Parker and Trevor Raines. Wapak and Kenton tied for the most players selected for the game.

TRACK: Tigers set for state meet

June 2, 2011

WAYNESFIELD — By now the journey to Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus has become a familiar one for the Waynesfield-Goshen Tigers.
They will make that trek once again for the Division III state track and field meet Friday and Saturday on the campus of the Ohio State University.
And if all goes well, they’ll be bringing some hardware home with them.
W-G’s best bet for a state champion is the girls 400-meter relay team of senior Abbey Gray, junior Morgan Horn, senior Frankie James and junior Ivy Horn.

BASEBALL: Wapak wins ACME opener

June 2, 2011

Wapakoneta opened the 2011 ACME season with a win, edging Indian Lake 3-1 on Wednesday at Wapakoneta High School.

“[Y]ou could tell some of these guys have not played for a couple of weeks,” Wapak coach Nick Sammetinger said. “I am happy with the performance but will continue to challenge each player to improve every day.”

Marshall Gerlach threw a complete-game, five-hitter for the win. Gerlach threw just 89 pitches, 67 of them for strikes.

He struck out 14 and walked just two. He allowed just one run, an unearned run in the seventh inning.
