Miss Teen Ohio headed to national pageant

County animals score with industry best

The Ohio State University graduate student Alexandra Gress quickly pointed out Wednesday the Auglaize County Junior Fair offered “cuts that certainly rank well with industry standards” during the carcass review at Kah Meats.
“Comparitively speaking, things were certainly at the industry average,” said Gress, who has been judging carcasses for fairs since 2007. ”The pork was very good quality. The grand and dairy steers were very good quality, too.”

Health Dept. terminates social services contract

A contract for social services offered as part of the family planning program at the Auglaize County Health Department has been terminated.
“We’re streamlining family planning,” Auglaize County Health Commissioner Charlotte Parsons said of the decision after the Auglaize County Health Board’s meeting this week. “We don’t feel we can afford to offer it any more.”
Parsons said the decision was made as the department continues to receive less funding through grants and other sources.

GOLF: 'Cats edge Wapak for county title

Six teams — five golfers each — and 18 holes.
And one stroke.
That’s the margin that separated the top three teams in the Auglaize County varsity boys golf tournament Wednesday at a soggy Wapakoneta Country Club.
The Minster Wildcats took the title after tying the Wapakoneta Redskins with matching team scores of 345. Under the tie-breaker rules, the match is then decided by the scores of the No. 5 golfers on each team.
Minster’s Xavier Francis turned in an 89 while Wapak’s Josh Apple carded a 96, handing the win to Minster.

Changes to clinics: Changes being made to vaccination sites

After review, changes are being made beginning Sept. 1 to immunization clinics offered by the Auglaize County Health Department.
An immunization clinic offered in New Bremen is closing, substituted by a walk-in clinic every Tuesday between 8 and 11 a.m. at the Auglaize County Health Department, located at 214 S. Wagner St. An existing clinic offered at the Health Department from 3 to 6 p.m. on Thursdays is changing to appointment only.

Sidewalks Main topic in Buckland

BUCKLAND — With the village expected to receive $230,000 in Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) money in the future, Buckland Village Council members continue to mull over how to spend the money to improve Main Street.
Councilors discussed with no action taken if they should use the money solely for curbs and gutters or should the village use some of the money to pay to replace sidewalks along Main Street. They also discussed if the village had enough money to replace the sidewalks itself or if property owners should pay part of or all of the sidewalk replacement.

Commission to gather ideas for tree lawn

CRIDERSVILLE — An area village’s Tree Commission members reported that a majority of fruit trees in the village have been removed.
Cridersville Tree Commission members reported at Monday’s Cridersville Village Council meeting that a majority of the red crab apple trees that are on the tree lawn along Main Street have been removed along with several pear trees.
Now, village administrators are waiting until autumn arrives to trim other trees in the tree lawn.

GOLF: Wapak girls 6th at Celina

CELINA — The Wapakoneta Redskins varsity girls golf team opened its 2011 season by finishing 6th in the 12-team Celina Invitational on Tuesday at The Fox’s Den in Celina.
Wapak compiled a team score of 412. The Shawnee Indians won the event with a 337.
Sophomore Shelby Kohler fired a 94 to lead the way for the Redskins. Senior Courtney Knippen was right behind with a 95.
Junior Hannah Smith carded a 101 and sophomore Bryly Beaman turned in a 122 to round out the scoring for Wapakoneta.
