Heat affects crop

July 21, 2011

Farmers that faced problems getting their corn crop planted because of frequent rainfall throughout the spring are now facing problems from the opposite end of the spectrum.
Extremely hot temperatures and high humidity for most of the past week are the latest problems facing Auglaize County farmers and their crops. The heat and humidity is expected to continue for the rest of the week. High temperatures are not expected to dip below 90 degrees until Sunday.

Local heroes: Father and son save neighbor’s life

A young boy who was just playing outside one day helped to save his neighbor’s life.
Five-year-old Damien Emrick, son of Jessica and Jesse Emrick, was playing outside on July 2, when he noticed something was not right and notified his father.
“I was outside and smelled smoke and saw a fire,” Damien Emrick said. “My dad went to the door and got the lady out.”

SECTORS pairs up groups

A bill, which is being introduced on the U.S. Senate floor by a legislator from Ohio, is aimed at helping the unemployed receive the training desired by high growth industries.
The Strengthening Employment Clusters to Organize Regional Success (SECTORS) Act attempts to address the disparity between the nation’s high unemployment rate and industry executives struggling to find qualified workers.

Robert Hegemier, 88

Robert Hegemier, 88, 1909 Kishler Dr., St. Marys, died at 2:15 a.m. Tuesday, July 19, 2011, at St. Marys Living Center.
He was born Jan. 22, 1923, in Ansonia, the son of Martha (Vogel) and Emil Hegemier. On May 27, 1944, in rural Auglaize County, he married Mary Lea Schamp, who survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Gary (Connie) Hegemier, of Earlysville, Va., Jim (Tracy) Hegemier, of Ellenton, Fla.; and four daughters, Sharon (Ed) Sullivan, of St. Marys, Shirley (Mark) Dine, of Hilliard, Joan Smith, of Celina, and Gloria (Judd) Morrison, of Charleston, N.C.

SWIMMING: Waves sweep 11-12 divisions

The Wapakoneta Waves 11-12 year-olds left their mark on the Western Ohio Aquatic League Championships last weekend at Wapakoneta WaterPark.
They were the Waves’ only age division to take top honors in both the boys and girls standings.
The 11-12 girls dominated, scoring 393 points to just 278 for the second-place Sherwood Sharks. Nine different girls medaled with four of them garnering four or more medals.
In fact, the 11-12 girls accounted for 17 percent of the combined team score for the Waves. They score more points than any other age division for the Waves.

Archie Dupont, 72

July 20, 2011

Archie A. Dupont, 904 Hager St., St. Marys, died at 5:16 a.m. Sunday, July 17, 2011, in the emergency department at Joint Township District Memorial Hospital in St. Marys.
He was born Feb. 17, 1939, in Ranger, Ind., the son of Isabell (Oldham) and Louis Dupont.
Private family services will be held. Burial will follow at Harshman Cemetery in Fairborn.
Arrangements are being handled by Miller Funeral Home in St. Marys.
