Issue 2 stirs debate: Opponents, proponents argue their sides on issue

Few people will argue Ohio Gov. John Kasich is attempting anything to reduce government spending and balance the state budget, but one piece of legislation in particular is stirring up plenty of attention regarding his methods to reach that goal.
State Issue 2, placed on the ballot as a referendum, would ban public worker strikes and restrict collective bargaining rights for public employees, including teachers, firefighters and police officers. Public employee unions will still be able to negotiate on wages but not on their pension or their health care benefits.

Student wins national FFA award

A local high school student has gained national recognition through a small business she runs.
Wapakoneta High School senior Mallory McDevitt received top honors as she earned national recognition during the National FFA Convention, which was held in Indianapolis in October.
The 18-year-old, who owns and operates her own organic produce business, farms a one-acre plot of land at her parent’s residence and has a clientele of approximately 30 people when she sells her fresh produce to each week.

Fundraiser memorializes WG fan

Waynefield-Goshen Schools students’ biggest fan’s legacy will live on, first with a fundraiser and then as an annual scholarship in her name.
The Deb Boday Memorial fundraiser is planned for 2 to 6:30 p.m. Saturday in the Waynesfield-Goshen School auditeria. All the money raised is to benefit the school’s band and choir trip to New York City in the spring.
Doors open at 2 p.m. with a quarter auction beginning at 3 p.m. Children’s games, a cake wheel, minihorse program, and a craft show featuring both local and more distant vendors are to take place throughout the afternoon.

Anne Prueter, 86

Anne Prueter, 86, of 1315 Kimberly Drive, St. Marys, and a longtime resident of Perrysburg, died at 9:46 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 30, 2011, at the Gardens of Celina.
She was born April 4, 1925, in Waynesfield, the daughter of Addie (Coolidge) and P. L. Pepple. On March 23, 1947, she married Albert “Tiny” Prueter and he preceded her in death on May 22, 2005.

Ruth Casanova, 84

Ruth Wollam Cassonova, 84, formerly of Mendon, died Sunday, Oct. 30, in Pottstown, Pa.

Roberta Barnes, 94, of St. Marys, died Friday, Oct. 28, 2011, at Otterbein-St. Marys.

Betty Hurley, 80

November 2, 2011

Betty June Hurley, 80, of Wapakoneta, died at 6:25 a.m. Monday, Oct. 31, 2011, in Heartland of Waterville Nursing Home.
She was born May 22, 1931 in Spencerville, the daughter of Bernice May Logan and Melvin David Richardson. Both parents are deceased. On May 14, 1947, she married the Rev. Donald E. Hurley, who survives at Otterbein-Cridersville Retirement Community.

Janet Mackenbach, 64

Janet S. Mackenbach, 64, 12012 Evans Road, Mendon, died at 9:55 a.m. Friday, Oct. 28, 2011, at St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima.
She was born Dec. 1, 1946, in Buckland, the daughter of Leota (King) and Gerald Shoffstall. On April 20, 1964, in Wapakoneta, she married Thomas A. Mackenbach, who died Oct. 5, 2006.

Iva Gibson, 77

Iva Jean Gibson, 77, 111 Clearview Court, St. Marys, died Friday, Oct. 28, 2011, at Golden Living Center in St. Marys.
She was born Jan. 14, 1934, in Middlesboro, Ky., the daughter of Woodie (Webb) and Rubin Burns. On June 10, 1954, she married Kenneth Gibson and he died Jan. 20, 2000.
Surviving are a son, Gary Gibson, of St. Marys, and a daughter, Lisa Coats, of Scottsburg, Ind.
Services are at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Samaria Missionary Baptist Church in St. Marys, with the Rev. Denny Hunter officiating. Burial will follow at Elm Grove Cemetery.
