Cuts hit FSA: Services, programs to feel hit

Federal budget cuts the past two years and additional cuts expected for 2013 is forcing a local farm executive to trim services for area farmers.

Auglaize County Farm Service Agency Executive Director Anita Green said the U.S. Farm Service Agency (FSA) experienced 12 percent budget cuts in 2011 and 2012, with additional cuts forthcoming in 2013. To help with the budget crisis, all federal employees experienced a wage freeze the past two years.

If a law enforcement officer believes a gun is for real, then the law enforcement officer will likely treat that weapon as being real, city leaders say.

The best way to avoid an incident, they advise, is to practice safety measures as if the airsoft toy weapon is a real gun.

Willetta Goodin, 61

March 2, 2012

Willetta Goodin, 61, of Waynesfield, passed away Thursday, March 1, 2012 at Wapakoneta Manor.
She was born on Nov. 7, 1949 in Middlesborough, Ky. to the late Zelma Brown and James Goodin. She is also preceded in death by a sister Charlotte Goodin.
She is survived by a son, James (Kellie) Goodin, of Waynesfield; three grandchildren, James II, Zackary, and Nickolas; and three aunts, Marcella Owens and Bessie Brooks, both of Cridersville; Norma (Coolidge) Smith of Barbersville, Ky.

Ruth Ann Kruse, 75

Ruth Ann Kruse, 75, 2901 Fair Road, Sidney, passed away at 5:25 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2012 at Fair Haven Shelby County Home.
She was born on June 4, 1936, in Greenville, the daughter of the late Hazel (Hill) and Ralph Hunt. On April 8, 1962, she married Lowell Kruse, who preceded her in death March 13, 2009.
Mrs. Kruse was a 1954 graduate of Greenville High School. She worked as a former office assistant. She was a member of the Anna United Methodist Church, where she formerly taught Catechism. She was associated with and supported the Humane Society, and leaves behind her beloved cats.

Tornado Watch

March 2, 2012

A PDS tornado watch has been issued for most of Auglaize and Shelby County until 9 p.m. tonight.
Weather maps showed a particularly strong area of storms in the area of Indianapolis at about 3 p.m. that were causing several tornado warnings in that area.
Auglaize County EMA Director Troy Anderson said a severe thunderstorm warning is likely to be issued for the area soon. The weather forecast includes strong thunderstorms during the evening that will give way to partly cloudy skies after midnight. Damaging winds, large hail, and possibly a tornado with some of the storms are possible.

Mapping the future: County GIS map website made more user friendly

Beginning today, a new application should make navigating Auglaize County geographic information system (GIS) mapping easier.

“We tried to keep it similar to what we already had and make it simpler to use,” Auglaize County GIS Director Joe Collin said as he clicked through the site, noting changes, many of which make it more user friendly. “There are no real changes to the map application put in place in 2005 other than a few layers added over the years. It’s a lot of the same tools, we’ve just made them easier to use.”

U.S. Navy Petty Officer Jordan Hensley surprised his mother Thursday at the Wapakoneta Elementary School Thursday with a visit. Annette Hensley works in the cafeteria at the school.

C’ville designs new site

CRIDERSVILLE — An area village’s website will soon get a makeover, as village officials are looking into different avenues for a redesign.

Cridersville Village Administrator John McDonald and Village Operator Jarid Kohlrieser have been researching companies and individuals to hire to create a new website for the village of Cridersville.

“(Mayor) Lorali Myers asked us to check on web design options suggested by (council president) Eric West and  (former councilor) Jeff Bassitt,” McDonald said.

WRESTLING: Martin falls in opener

March 2, 2012

Wapakoneta Redskins junior J.T. Martin (106 pounds) was pinned by Eaton freshman Michael May at the 5:40 mark of their first-round match at the Division II state wrestling meet Thursday at Value City Arena in Columbus.

Martin bounced back with a 5-1 win over Whitehall-Yearling sophomore Noah Jay in the consolation opener to advance to the second day of competition today.

The best Martin can place now is third.

BASKETBALL: Tigers bow out

March 1, 2012

COLDWATER — St. Henry’s large size and deep bench was too much for Waynesfield-Goshen to handle.

“We were intimidated going into the game,” Tigers varsity coach Ryan Taylor said.

The Redskins rolled to a 67-31 win over W-G in a Division IV sectional semifinal Wednesday at the Palace in Coldwater.   St. Henry improved its record to 17-4. Waynesfield-Goshen finished the season 6-15.
