Wapak wins Scholastic Bowl

With seven wins in nine varsity matches, the Wapakoneta High School Scholastic Bowl team won the ninth annual Scholastic Bowl Tournament held Friday at The Ohio State University at Lima.

The Redskins team, under the direction of coach Adam Friemering, consists of Joey Jose, George Jose, Austin Klingler, Ross Kohler, Chris Schwartz and Cole Thrush.

Schwartz also earned recognition as being named to the WBL Scholastic Bowl All-Tournament Team, chosen by the coaches of the other teams.

Soccer sparks interest of student

Dressed as the late magician Harry Houdini, Kaleb Benny would rather slip the handcuffs of school work to be on a lined soccer field.

Benny, a sixth-grader at Wapakoneta Middle School, said he was no longer nervous about giving his presentation after having given his speech to two judges Friday during the annual Biography Fair.

While he likes schools, the 11-year-old son of Wendy and Steve Benny is quick to point out he would rather have given his presentation on a soccer player or be playing on the soccer field.

NCAA: Buckeyes try to bounce back vs. Loyola, Md.

COLUMBUS (AP) — Ohio State won’t have far to travel to play in the NCAA tournament.

At the same time, though, the Buckeyes face a logistical nightmare.

The Buckeyes (27-7) will play 15th-seeded Loyola of Maryland in the second round in Pittsburgh on Thursday.

Since the game is just a half-day drive from campus for Ohio State’s mass of scarlet-clad fans, that’s good news.

Pearl Walker, 82

Pearl Walker, 84, formerly of 319 S. Beech St., St. Marys, died at 8:40 p.m. Friday, March 9, 2012, at Golden Living Center – Valley in St. Marys.
She was born April 26, 1927, in Pruden, Tenn., to Elvin and Mary (Adkins) Orick.
Services are at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Miller Funeral Home in St. Marys. Burial will follow at Resthaven Memory Gardens near Moulton.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Marie Arnett, 90

Marie M. Arnett, 90, of Wapakoneta, died at 2:40 p.m. Sunday, March 11, 2012, at her residence surrounded by her family.
She was born May 6, 1921, in Fryburg, the daughter of Mary (Reier) and John Roth, who preceded her in death. On Oct. 26, 1944, she married Frederick “Fritz” Arnett, who died Jan. 17, 1992.

FATHER-SON SKILLS CLINIC: The Wapakoneta High School boys basketball coaching staff will be conducting its 1st annual Father-Son Skills Clinic (Saturday, March 23 at Wapakoneta Elementary School) to give dads the opportunity to take the court with their sons and receive valuable instruction at the same time.  

E. Lucille (Bushong) Eichhorn, 86

E. Lucille (Bushong) Eichhorn, 86, of Wapakoneta, died at 8:41 a.m., Thursday, March 8, 2012, at Otterbein-Cridersville.

She was born July 27, 1925, in Williamstown, the daughter of M. Marie (Steinman) and Marion U. Bushong, who preceded her in death. In 1964, she married C. Gaylord Eichhorn who died in 1967.  

Surviving are a brother, Everett Bushong, of Dunkirk; a step-daughter, Gladys Whitmer, of Kettering; and several nieces, nephews, and step-relatives.

She was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.

Randall C. 'Randy' Hensley, 61

March 9, 2012

Randall C. “Randy” Hensley, 61 of Lima died 7 a. m., Friday, March 9 at Criders-ville Health Care.  

He was born Oct. 5, 1950, in Borger, Texas, to Betty (Jacobs) and Thomas Richard Hensley.  They survive in Floyd, Va.  

He married Gwen Wooley  on June 18, 1994, and she survives in Lima.

Mr. Hensley served in the U. S. Army.

Survivors include a son, Cody Hensley of Lima; and a daughter Rachel Hensley of Lima.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Thomas Jefferson, Martha Stewart and William Shakespeare all lurked through the halls Friday at the Wapakoneta Middle School.

The sixth-graders, who held their annual Biography Fair on Thursday for parents and Friday for fellow students and judges, had the opportunity to select a famous person, research that person and then dress-up like them. All their work was judged by members of the local community.

“They worked so hard,” sixth-grade teacher Michelle Boyer said. “They know the person they are studying and are very excited.”

Relay readies for 15th year

In 15 weeks, the Auglaize County Fairgrounds midway will host walkers for an 18-hour walk for the 15th annual Relay for Life as teams and individuals celebrate victims and survivors of cancer.

Trying to mirror the stages through which a cancer survivor endures, Relay for Life organizers have chosen the theme, “A Cure for All Seasons.”
