Helen Copeland, 93, of rural Wapakoneta, died at 8:40 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2012, at Lima Memorial Health System.
Arrangements are incomplete at the Bayliff & Eley Funeral Home in Wapakoneta.
Verti Lee Chaffins, 79, of Bourbonnais, Ill., formerly of St. Marys, died Tuesday, February 14, 2012, in the emergency room at Riverside Medical Center in Kankakee, Illinois.
She was born Nov. 26, 1932, in Mousie, Ky., the daughter of Cordie (Tuttle) and Edgle Wicker. On Feb. 13, 1947, she married Richard Chaffins, and he preceded her in death Oct. 28, 2005.
She is survived by two daughters, Carolyn Manago, of Momence, Ill., and Norma (Eric) Prather, of Bourbonnais, Ill,; and a son, Charles (RoseAnn) Chaffins, of Sidney.
Anna Lea Miller, 76, of Lima, formerly of Wapakoneta, died at 6:05 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2012, at Baton Rouge in Lima.
She was born Aug. 24, 1935, in Alton, W.Va., the daughter of Mirley Jane (Kittle) at Aubrey Russell Tenney, who preceded her in death. On May 10, 1953, she married Ronald D. Miller, and he died Feb. 23, 1986.
Extending and staggering the terms of office for future city councilors now goes before full council for debate.
Wapakoneta City Council Term of Office Ad Hoc Committee members recommended Wednesday sending the proposal to full council for its consideration regarding extending the terms of the council president and all councilors to four years from two years and staggering the terms of council ward seats with councilors-at-large seats.
UNIOPOLIS — Union Township trustees briefly discussed Wednesday the possibility of acquiring the village of Uniopolis should councilors decide to unincorporate, or dissolve, the village.
The move could create budgetary problems for the township, which, while currently more monetarily solvent, faces financial problems of their own as they also face significant cuts.
A conversation between a grandmother and her grandchildren sparked an idea for Mercy Unlimited.
Mercy Unlimited is hosting a sock drive during the month of February. Individuals can bring in packs of sock for infants and children and place then in a barrel at the store.
Mercy Unlimited Store Manager Angie Combs came up with this idea after talking with two of her grandchildren, who are in kindergarten and second grade.
“My grandkids would tell me that ‘so and so’ didn’t have socks on at school today,” Combs said.
Just looking at the records, the Wapakoneta Redskins appear poised for a strong finish in their final three games of the varsity boys basketball regular season.
The operative word being “appear.”
The games aren’t played — as goes the old cliché goes — on paper.
Wapak will host the Shawnee Indians in a Western Buckeye League matchup on Friday night and the Coldwater Cavaliers on Saturday night.
The Redskins wrap up the regular and league seasons next Friday at the Kenton Wildcats.
Mildred Wolfal, 90, formerly of St. Marys, died Saturday, Feb. 11, 2012 in Green Valley, Ariz.

Margaret Jane Kaeck, 96, of St. Marys, formerly of Dayton, passed away Saturday, Feb. 11, 2012, at the Otterbein Home in St. Marys.
She was born April 20, 1915, in Dayton, the daughter of the late Helen Louise (Shroder) and Walter Bucher. She married Ralph Kaeck, who died in 1999.
Surviving are two daughters, Shirley (Darrell) Goodrich, of West Carrollton, and Karen Sparks, of West Milton; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three sisters and a brother.
Savannah Joy Saylor Obermiller, infant daughter of Sarah Louise Saylor and Brent Obermiller, died at birth at 8:31 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2012, at St. Ritaâs Medical Center in Lima. Her parents survive in Wapakoneta.
