Middle class pushes back

Reflecting on the results of a referendum, a U.S. legislator proclaimed the middle class pushed back with a first-ever vote of its kind on the ballot regarding public policy.

U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown discussed Wedmesday the significance of Ohio voters defeating Issue 2 and thus rejecting Senate Bill 5, which stripped public unions of some of their bargaining rights.

Immunize to avoid the flu

As flu season begins to get underway, the public is encouraged to be immunized.

“We’re just starting to see it,” Auglaize County Health Department Nursing Supervisor Cindy Jones said this week of influenza cases locally. “Our concern is once people do their Thanksgiving sharing they will be passing more than the turkey.”

With the flu vaccine taking approximately two weeks to become effective, Jones said they are encouraging the public to come in as soon as possible to get one.

Festival of Trees to bring holiday cheer

A local tradition, filled with holiday cheer, will soon be underway in Wapakoneta.
The 13th annual Festival of Trees is set to be held from Nov. 16 through Nov. 20 at The Gardens at Wapakoneta.
The Festival of Trees is a silent auction of decorated Christmas Trees and other decor to raise funds for the organization’s hospice care.
“It has become like a tradition in the area,” Community Health Professionals Marketing and Volunteer Coordinator Niki Du Vall said. “I have people that start calling in August asking when the festival will be held.”

Kenneth Bauer, 76

Kenneth F. Bauer, 76, of Heritage Manor, Minster, formerly of Botkins, died at 11:04 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2011, at Joint Township District Memorial Hospital in St. Marys.
He was born Aug. 3, 1935, in Botkins, the son of Leona (Reickert) and Leo A. Bauer.
Services are at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Botkins, with the Rev. Matthew Lee officiating. Burial is to follow in the Immaculate Conception Cemetery in Botkins.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Bayliff & Eley Funeral Home in Wapakoneta.

Jean Hogan, 86

November 9, 2011

Jean Enzle Hogan 86, of Wapakoneta, died at 5:30 a.m. Tuesday Nov. 8, 2011, at Joint Township District Memorial Hospital in St. Marys.
She was born Oct. 6, 1925, in Dayton, to Dorothy E. Evans and Maurice V. Bickel, who preceded her in death. On Oct. 19, 1946, she married B. C. Enzle who preceded her in death April 21, 1975 and later married Harold E. Hogan Oct. 17, 1987 and he preceded her in death May 16, 2006.

Tammy Layton, 42

Tammy Kay Layton, 42, of Lima, died Monday, Nov. 7, 2011, at her residence.
She was born Feb. 11, 1969, in Lima, the daughter of Judith Ann Crowe Edward C. Layton. Her father survives in Sidney.
Also surviving are a son, Dalton Duncan, of Lima.

Mary Altherr, 82

Mary Jane Altherr, 82 of Tipton, Ind., died at 1:10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2011, at her residence..
She was born Nov. 20, 1928, in Frankfort, Ind., the daughter of Mary Blanche (Spaulding) and Carl Russell Kelley. On Sept. 4, 1954, she married Eugene Altherr, and he preceded her in death on Jan. 6, 1996.
She was a homemaker. She was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Rosary Society, Legion of Mary, St. Christopher Auxiliary of the Knights of Columbus, and the American Legion Auxiliary.

Rosemary Serr, 83

Rosemary Eileen Serr, 83, of Jackson Center, passed away at 11:20 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 7, 2011 at Dorothy Love Retirement Home in Sidney.
She was born Feb. 1, 1928, in Auglaize County, the daughter of the late Ida (Wierwille) and Lawrence Schroer. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Willis Schroer. On Nov. 28, 1946, in Jackson Center, she married Edison Serr and he preceded her in death on June 17, 1999.

Norma Jeanne Lontz, 85

Norma Jeanne (Earl) Lontz, 85, passed away Nov. 6, 2011.
A lifelong resident of Auglaize County, she was born Sept. 11, 1926, grew up near Geyer and New Hampshire and lived in Uniopolis and Wapakoneta.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Olive and Norman Earl; husbands, Darrell Dean Coate and Junior Lontz; a sister, Ida Lou Springer; and a granddaughter, Jeanne Brown.

John ‘Jake’ F. Frey III, 40

John “Jake” F. Frey III, 40, of 520 N. Pear Street in St. Marys, died Sunday Nov. 6, 2011, at his residence.
He was born Aug. 9, 1971, in St. Marys, to Mary (Makley) and John II Frey. On Sept. 20, 2003, he married Hope Hall, who survives.
He is also survived by three daughters Tabatha Thornsberry, of St. Marys, Summer Frey, of St. Marys, and Jonda Frey, of St. Marys; a son Jakey Frey, of St. Marys.
He was preceded in death by a son John Frey IV.
