Donna Jacobs, 68

February 7, 2012

Donna Rose Jacobs, 68, 111 S. Buckeye St., St. Marys, died at 2:25 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 4, 2012, at Kindred Hospital in Lima.
She was born March 14, 1943, in Detroit, to Florence L. (Duffern) and Elmer C. Kusterer. On March 4, 1967, in St. Marys, she married Jack A. Jacobs, who survives.
Also surviving is a son, David Jacobs, of St. Marys.
She was preceded in death by a son, Todd Jacobs.
Services are at 1 p.m. Friday at Miller – Long & Folk Funeral Home in St. Marys. Burial will follow at Resthaven Memory Gardens near Moulton.

Juanita Turner, 91

Juanita E. Cockerell Robinson Turner, 91, of Lake Orion, Mich., formerly of Cridersville, died at 6:07 p.m. Monday, Feb. 6, 2012, at Waltonwood University in Rochester Hills, Mich.
She was born April 5, 1920, in Springfield, the daughter of the late Fannie Shrider and Walter Cockerell. On May 11, 1957, she married Cyrus Arthur Turner who died March 26, 2003.
Services are at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, with the Rev. James C. Couser officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery in Lima.

Clarence Cox, 76

Clarence William “Bill” Cox, 76, of McGuffey, died at 11:36 p.m. Friday, Feb. 3, 2012, at his residence.
He was born Jan. 2, 1936, in Atlasburg, Pa., the son of Hilda Mae Park and Morgan Ulysis Cox. On July 21, 1956, he married Dorothy Wolanski, who survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Daniel William Cox, of McGuffey, and Timothy Morgan Cox, of Tucson, Ariz.; and two daughters, Valerie Lynn Cox, of Eldon, Mo., and Beverly Ann Roeder of Tucson, Ariz.
Private family services will be held at a later date. No public visiting hours are planned.

Carolyn Stirn, 78

Carolyn P. Stirn, 78, of rural Lima, died at 3:45 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 4, 2012, at St.Rita’s Medical Center in Lima.
She was born July 10, 1933, in Wyandot County, the daughter of Marjorie (Buckingham) and Dale E. Parsell. On Aug. 28, 1955, she married Rev. Eldon D. Stirn, who survives.
Also surviving are a son, Phillip D. Stirn, of rural Lima; and a daughter, Beth A. Vondran, of rural Lima.
Services are at 11 a.m. Friday at Shawnee Alliance Church, with the Rev. Dr. Daniel H. Messner officiating. Burial will follow at Spencerville Cemetery.

Doreen Brewster, 91

February 6, 2012

Doreen A. Brewster, 91, 248 Greentree Lane, Bellefontaine, died at 4 a.m. Friday, Feb. 3, 2012, at Green Hills Retirement Community in West Liberty.
She was born Aug. 5, 1920, in London, England, the daughter of the late Avis and Thomas Wood. On Aug. 13, 1944, in London, England, she married Fredrick B. Brewster and he survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Peter T. Brewster, of Zanesfield, and Michael (Terry) Brewster, of Bellefontaine; and a daughter, Judy (Doug Parker) Weber, of Bellefontaine.

Donald Yost, 79

Donald “Don” William Yost, 79, of Wapakoneta, died Tuesday evening, Jan. 31, 2012, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Savannah, Ga.
He was born in Pennsylvania, the son of the late Lois (Hess) and Frank Yost. He married Susan Kay McElroy Yost, who survives.

War has ties to county

A local history buff shared the story of the War of 1812, including its ties to Auglaize County this weekend with members of the local genealogical society.

Often referred to as America’s second war for independence and the forgotten war, St. Marys attorney Bill Huber began studying the war while researching family names for his son.

“I began researching and never stopped,” Huber said of the war that celebrates its bicentennial. “I was surprised with the information that is out there.”

Land for buffer zone: City to purchase property to protect wells, expand plant

Knowing a state Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requirement is imminent, Wapakoneta city administrators have negotiated a land deal to increase its holdings to protect the city’s water supply.

Wapakoneta City Council members are to hear the first reading of an ordinance granting authority to Mayor Rodney Metz to consummate a deal for 17.72 acres for $225,000 from Vernita Mould.

Third-grader hopes to play sports in future

Basketball and golf run in the Hefner family and 9-year-old Jonathan Hefner is following suit.

The third-grader at Wapakoneta Elementary School lists his favorite hobbies as sports, specifically basketball and golf, but also football.

“I started playing golf when I was 3 with my grandpa,” said Jonathan, who says they continue to play together in the summer and are sometimes joined by his dad.

The son of Jennie and Jason Hefner said it was his father who taught him to play basketball.
