Richard Joseph, 87

March 21, 2012

Richard Joseph, 87, died at 9:05 p.m. Saturday, March 10, 2012, at his residence.
He was born on Sept. 14,1924, in Hardin County, the only child of Lillian (Hicks) and Warney Joseph. His parents died before he was two years old, so his maternal grandparents raised him. He had been married to Betty L. (Tackett) Joseph for more than 60 years and she preceded him in death on Dec. 30, 2010.

A Wapakoneta High School 2002 graduate put up a fight as the returning champion for Tuesday’s episode of Jeopardy, but he was unable to keep the title as another contestant took the lead after the Final Jeopardy question.

Mandel runs on job growth

A Republican candidate for Ohio’s U.S. Senate seat says he is focusing his campaign on creating jobs in the Buckeye State and basing his campaign on the fact he is a candidate of the people and not beholden to either party.

Ohio’s state Treasurer Josh Mandel, who was elected in 2010, is seeking to oust Democratic U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown, who was elected to his current position in 2007.

Music and More set

In its 11th year, Music and More features 11 show choirs from three states during the competition to be held Saturday at Wapakoneta High School.

Groups begin performing at 9 a.m. with finals set to begin at 7 p.m. Wapakoneta High School’s own Singsation is scheduled to take the stage at 9:30 p.m.

Street work dispute: City takes tree report under advisement

An urban forester’s scathing report of the city’s dealing with trees to enhance a gateway into the city will be taken under advisement, a Wapakoneta administrator says, but alterations to change the street improvement project cannot occur without jeopardizing state grant dollars.

Urban Forester Stephanie Miller, who works for the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Forestry, prepared a report for the city voicing concerns for the residential area along the $2.6 million East Auglaize Street reconstruction and roadway enhancement project.

Kill’s source point found

An investigation has determined that manure runoff from an area farm caused the massive fish kill Friday in Owl and Pusheta creeks.

While the official news release had not been released yet, an official at the Ohio Department of Natural Resources confirmed a total of 28,770 dead fish or animals were found in the two creeks. The runoff was caused by manure from a farm owned by Lowell Headapohl, 12170 Burr Oak Road.

Wright crowned champ, to play tonight

Wapakoneta native Alex Wright is advancing to the next round, as he will be the returning champion on Tuesday’s episode of Jeopardy.

Wright ended the game with a final cash amount of $25,600, winning by $1,600, against a contestant who also got the Final Jeopardy question correct and started the final round with more money.    

“It feels great,” Wright said of the results. “The first game was so well played by all of the contestants.”

Alma Anna (Feil) Camper, 103

Alma Anna (Feil) Camper, 103, of Wapakoneta, died at 7:45 a.m. Friday, March 16, 2012, at The Gardens, Wapakoneta. She was born April 9, 1908, in Auglaize County, the daughter of Anna (Aufderhaar) and William Feil.
A 1925 graduate of Blume High School, she was the last surviving member of her class. After graduating high school, she went to business college and worked as a secretary in Lima.
On Dec. 26, 1926, she married Floyd (Sam) Camper, and he passed away Jan. 23, 1986.

Kathleen Y. Gossard, 64

Kathleen Y. Gossard, 64, 1025 Edwards Street, St. Marys, died suddenly at 8:35 p.m. Friday, March 16, 2012, in the emergency department of Joint Township District Memorial Hospital in St. Marys.
She was born Aug. 30, 1947, in Celina, the daughter of Betty Lou (Schroer) and Norbert Steineman. On June 8, 1968, she married David Gossard, and he survives at the residence.
Also surviving are two sons, Brian Gossard, of St. Marys, and Paul Gossard, of St. Marys; and two daughters, Carolyn (Douglas) Bader of St. Marys, and Angela Gossard, of Saint Marys.

Virgil Behr, 63

Virgil C. Behr, 63, 333 Concord Avenue, St. Marys, died at 9:55 p.m. Friday, March 16, 2012 at his residence.
He was born July 14, 1948, in Sidney, to Rita (Greve)and Wilbur Behr.
On April 15, 1978, at St. Francis Catholic Church, Cranberry Prairie, he married Patricia A. Dorsten, who survives.
