Water rate to rise: Wapak billing discrepancy causes stir

Faced with an annual debt load increasing by 18 percent created mainly from building the new Wapakoneta Water Treatment Plant, city leaders plan to balance the books with a water rate increase.

Wapakoneta utility consumers should see a 5 percent increase in their water bill starting Sept. 1 and then every Jan. 1 thereafter if Wapakoneta City Council members pass an ordinance read for the first time at Monday’s council meeting.

Curfew policy to be reviewed

Top student has a positive attitude

Always smiling and happy is how classmates describe one of Wapakoneta High School’s top five students for 2012.

“We knew we didn’t have a chance against him for prom king,” a classmate Chris Schwartz said of Ryan Kremer. “He smiles all the time and everyone likes that.”

BASEBALL/SOFTBALL: All-WBL teams announced

When you’ve thrown 44 straight scoreless innings, people start to notice.

Wapakoneta Redskins southpaw Johnny Crawford received that notice when the All-Western Buckeye League baseball and softball honors were released Tuesday.

Crawford was the lone Redskins baseball player to be selected to the first team.  The junior pitcher has not given up a run since a 7-2 win over Greenville on Tuesday, March 27.

TRACK: Regional qualifiers ready

Only one meet separates a select group from a trip to Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus.

More than a dozen area athletes secured their places in the regional track and field meets based on their performances in the district meets last week.

The Waynesfield-Goshen Tigers lead the way with six athletes in 12 events qualifying.

The Botkins Trojans qualified four individuals in five events and one relay team.

And the Wapakoneta Redskins are sending two athletes in two events.

Michael Elliott, 64

May 21, 2012

Michael D. Elliott, 64, of Jackson Center, passed away Saturday evening, May 19, 2012, at Wilson Memorial Hospital in Sidney.
H3 was born Sept. 7, 1947, in Sidney, the son of the late Opal Kies and Russell Elliott. On Sept. 29, 2001, in Jackson Center, he married the former Cindy Temple, who survives.
Also surviving are a son, Todd Elliott, of Cincinnati; a daughter, Chasidy Miner, of Cridersville; and three grandchildren, Abby Elliott, TC Elliott and Makayla Miner.

Mary Lou Kinstle, 86

Mary Lou Kinstle, 86, of Lima, died at 8:05 p.m. Friday, May 18, 2012, at her residence.
She was born Jan. 18, 1926, in Wapakoneta, the daughter of Gertrude P. Schneider and Clem Meier, who preceded her in death. On June 22, 1997, she married Donald F. Kinstle, who preceded her in death.

Razing interest: City considers applying for the demolition grant

With a list of buildings in need of being razed, Wapakoneta city administrators plan to seek state funds to help demolish the structures.

Wapakoneta Mayor Rodney Metz said the city is working with the county to obtain state funds through the Moving Ohio Forward Demolition grant program and to take advantage of $75 million in state funds available through the Ohio Attorney General’s Office.
