Unemployment tumbles

Unemployment rates across the region tumbled in May.

According to data released by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, Auglaize County registered an unemployment rate of 5.5 percent in May, a decrease from 5.9 percent in April. That figured ranked the county six-lowest in the state and among seven that recorded a figure at or less than 5.5 percent. Last year, the county had an unemployment rate of 7.5 percent.

Boater found dead in lake

ST. MARYS — Less than 24 hours after a drifting boat touched off a search for a missing boater, the body of a 59-year-old man was found near Riley Bay in Grand Lake St. Marys.

The body of James Price was found near Riley Bay Wednesday afternoon — less than a day after emergency personnel started searching for him after his 22-foot pontoon boat was found adrift Tuesday night. Price’s body was found near where his boat was located.

Emergency response coordinator earns certification

The emergency response coordinator for the Auglaize County Health Department recently earned certification from an international board.

Don Jump recently earned the certified healthcare emergency professional (CHEP) designation from the International Board for Certification of Safety Managers (IBFCSM). He had to meet educational, experience and examination requirements set forth by the board to earn the master level designation.

Search starts: Man believed to go missing while fishing

CELINA — A boat found adrift on Grand Lake St. Marys Tuesday night sparked a search for a missing person that continued this morning.

Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Watercraft spokesperson John Wisse said officials received a report early Tuesday evening that an officer found a vacant boat adrift on the lake. Evidence found on the boat led to a search for a missing person — a 57-year-old male who was reportedly fishing on the 22-foot pontoon boat earlier in the day.

Benjamin F. Yale, better known as Ben, always wanted to be in a position to help out.

Yale died at 11:58 p.m. June 13. The Waynesfield native had his hands involved in a lot of activity in the area.

However, Yale often operated behind the scenes and did not want any attention to himself, friends say. It was that trait, a quiet humbleness, they say that made him so well known.

Veterans groups hold fundraiser for memorial

The veterans organizations in Wapakoneta have joined forces to help beautify the entry to Veterans Memorial Park and help defray the costs of a new monument to be dedicated in July.

The Wapakoneta American Legion Post 330, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8445 and the Amvets Post 333 are holding a chicken dinner from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. June 30 at Veterans Memorial Park. Tickets can be purchased through June 27.

John Grise, 61, of Celina, died Tuesday, June 19, 2012, in the emergency department at Joint Township District Memorial Hospital in St. Marys.

Ernest Phlipot, 82

Ernest “Ernie” B. Phlipot, 82, of New Bremen, died at 10:15 a.m. Tuesday, June 19, 2012, at St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima.
He was born May 5, 1930, in Newport, the son of Lena (Francis) and Henry Phlipot. On Sept. 27, 1950, he married Jeannette Budde, who died June 16, 2004. On Feb. 10, 2007, he married Betty Donnerberg Bergman, and she died on July 24, 2009.
Surviving are four sons, Bill Phlipot, of New Bremen, Tom Phlipot, of New Bremen, Dan Phlipot, of Conyers, Ga., and Ken Phlipot, of Celina; and two daughters, Dot Scheer, of New Bremen, and Deb Scroggins, of Seabrook, Texas.

Joseph Henne, 99

Joseph D. Henne, 99, of Cridersville, died at 5:12 p.m. Saturday, June 16, 2012, at St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima.
He was born April 23, 1913, in Salem Township, near Kossuth, the son of the late Ethel Richardson and Daniel Henne. On July 31, 1937, he married Evelyn L. Rasneor who died Nov. 2, 2006.

Gayla Will, 97

Gayla M. Will, 97, of Wapakoneta, formerly of rural Lima, died at 4:43 a.m. Monday, June 18, 2012, at Wapakoneta Manor.
She was born Aug. 5, 1915, in Amanda Township, Allen County, the daughter of Emma Mae (Masters) and Van B. Myers. On May 20, 1944, she married Donald Robert Will, and he died Feb. 21, 2011.
Survivors are two sons, Ronald Myers, of Florida, and Robert Will, of Cridersville.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Carol Ann.
Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. Burial will be at the Wright Cemetery.
There will be no public visitation.
