Auction benefits Buckland FD

In an effort to support the men serving their community, the Buckland Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary is hosting a quarter auction Saturday to benefit the department.

“The Buckland Volunteer Fire Department is a private entity and relies on fundraisers to raise money to insure the department can operate with the best equipment possible,” Buckland Volunteer Fire Auxiliary Vice President Rachel Winkler said.

The auction is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. at the fire department in downtown Buckland. Doors open at 5 p.m.

BASEBALL: Redskins roll past Elida

A northwest wind dropping temperatures to near freezing failed to stop the Wapakoneta Redskins hot bats in a Western Buckeye League game against the Elida Bulldogs.

Junior shortstop Josh Apple paced the Redskins smoking three hits and collecting two RBIs, while junior starting pitcher Johnny Crawford allowed only one frozen rope hit in five innings of a 9-1 victory.

With the win, the Redskins improve to 10-1 overall and 3-0 in the WBL, while Elida drops to 3-9 on the season and 1-2 in league play.

ELIDA — Back-to-back home runs in high school softball are a rarity.

Back-to-back home runs by twin sisters?

The words “blue moon” come to mind.

But Wapakoneta Redskins seniors Courtney and Ashley Knippen did just that Tuesday night, capping a seven-run second inning as Wapak rolled to a 16-7 win over the Elida Bulldogs at Dorothy Edwards Field.

ELIDA — The Wapakoneta Redskins varsity tennis team rolled to a 5-0 sweep of the Elida Bulldogs in a Western Buckeye League match Tuesday at Elida High School.

In first singles, Nic Oen blanked Ardie Sayoto 6-0, 6-0.

Joey Jose posted a 6-2, 6-4 win over Christopher Ellison in second singles.

Wapak completed its singles sweep with Andy Faller besting Aric Thompson 6-4, 6-2.

The first-doubles tandem of Rex Azbell and Anthony Kenard whipped Jordan Greeley and Nick Kempton 6-0, 6-1.

‘At a crossroads’: Apollo superintendent explains center’s needs

Considering their options, Apollo Career Center administrators are planning a community forum this week to discuss future funding and renovation options.

Apollo Superintendent Judy Wells addressed Wapakoneta City Schools Board of Education members Tuesday to explain the needs of the career and technical education center.

Contract cuts money for C’ville

CRIDERSVILLE — The Cridersville fire chief brought up a new proposed fire contract by a neighboring community.

Fire Chief Ron Mertz informed Criderville Village Council members Monday that Shawnee Township trustees want to cut the amount they pay on a service contract with the village.

Typically, the two government entities sign a three-year contract with Shawnee Township paying $17,000 per year for Cridersville’s fire and rescue service to the township.

County’s health remains steady, according to survey

Auglaize County remains the 10th healthiest county in the state, according to a national survey published recently by the University of Wisconsin.

“County Health Rankings and Roadmaps — A Healthier Nation, County by County” is in its third year of taking a closer look at the health of counties across the country with the end goal being to pinpoint areas communities can work toward improving.

Eva DeLong, 88

Eva I. DeLong, 88, of Wapakoneta died at 12:45 p.m. Tuesday, April 10, 2012, at St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima.
She was born Oct. 15, 1923, near Cridersville to Norma Fox and Russell Williams. On July 27, 1946, she married Clarence F. ‘Winnie” DeLong, and he preceded her in death April 17, 1995.
Surviving are a son, Dennis (Jean) DeLong, of Wapakoneta; three grandchildren, Doug (Kelli) DeLong, David (Ashley) DeLong and Michele (Rob) Seidel; and three great-grandsons, David Thomas, Grant Matthew and Ethan Alexander Seidel.
