B’land mayor updates on sewer

Buckland Mayor Dan Lambert and Julie Ward of Rural Communities Assistance Program (RCAP) met briefly with the Auglaize County commissioners Tuesday to discuss the village’s expansive, upcoming sewer improvement project.

Buckland Village Council members learned in February the village received a $1.3 million, 50 percent grant for design and construction of a new $2.3 million sanitary system in the village.

The money may be available to aid the village in the construction of the new sewer system.

Chief wins award: Red Cross honors Krites with Clara Barton honor

A member of the Wapakoneta Fire Department recently placed a plaque from the American Red Cross in his office — honored by the recognition but also believing he escaped the publicity which accompanies such a tribute.

Wapakoneta Fire Chief Kendall Krites says he just set out his Clara Barton Award plaque after earning the honor this month.

“I was actually shocked and it was also very humbling,” Krites said after being presented with the award at a luncheon.

He received the honor for his work in Auglaize County.

Mandel to make visit to Wapak

A Republican candidate for Ohio’s U.S. Senate seat is making a stop in the Wapak-oneta area next week to answer questions and educate local citizens on his stance.

The Allen and Auglaize County Patriots groups are hosting state Treasurer Josh Mandel, who is seeking to oust Democratic U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown in the November election.

Mandel is scheduled to speak at 7:30 p.m. on May 3 at The Grand Plaza, in Wapakoneta, and he will give a 15-20 minute introduction, and then he will answer questions from the audience.

Sobriety checkpoint planned

A sobriety checkpoint is being planned in the area this week to deter and intercept impaired motorists.

Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP) Wapakoneta Post Commander Lt. Scott Carrico said they try to do at least two such OVI (operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of drugs or alcohol) checkpoints each year, aiming for one in each of the two counties the post handles.

Ronnie Craft, 55

Ronnie Joe Craft Sr., 55, 10526 Mercer – Auglaize County Line Road, St. Marys, died at 1:15 a.m. Sunday, April 22, 2012, in the emergency department at Joint Township District Memorial Hospital in St. Marys.
He was born Nov. 13, 1956 in Dayton, the son of Imogene (Elam) and Talmadge Craft.
Surviving is a son, Ronnie Joe Craft Jr., of Miamisburg.
Services are at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Miller Funeral Home in St. Marys. Burial will follow at Elm Grove Cemetery in St. Marys.
Friends may call from noon to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Mary Stienecker, 77

Mary Louise Stienecker, 77, 705 Oil Street, St. Marys, died at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 17, 2012, at St. Marys Living Center.
She was born Oct. 6, 1934, in St. Marys, the daughter of to Vivian C. (Fischer) and Willard H. Stienecker.
Services are at 11 a.m. Thursday at Miller Funeral Home in St. Marys, with the Rev. Dr. Ed Bray officiating.
Burial will follow at Elm Grove Cemetery in St. Marys.
Friends may call from 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Contributions may be directed to the Mary Louise Stienecker Nursing Scholarship.

Annette Sanders, 91

Annette V. Sanders, 91, of Celina, died Thursday, April 29, 2012, at the Gardens at Celina.
She was born June 27, 1920, in Osgood, the daughter of Mary Agnes “Minnie” (Henry) and Leo J. Bruns. On June 27, 1939, she married Ted L. Sanders, and he died May 5, 1988.
Surviving are a son, Tom Sanders, of Celina; and two daughters, Norma “Skeet” Wolters, of Coldwater, and Patricia Brookhart, of Celina.
She was preceded in death by a son, Larry Sanders.

Lester Seibert, 84

Lester W. Seibert, 84, of rural Spencerville, died at 6:50 p.m. Sunday, April 22, 2012, at St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima.

Dennis Ward, 63

Dennis G. Ward, 63, of 18390 Moulton-Ft. Amanda Road, Wapakoneta, died at 8:22 a.m. Sunday, April 22, 2012, at St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima.
He was born June 15, 1948, in Celina, the son of Alice (Cotterman) and Charles Ward. On Dec. 17, 1966, he married Kathy L. Dunlap and she survives at the residence.

A ‘love story’: Students enjoy roles in historical musical

The Austrian Alps came alive with the sound of music as Maria Rainer walked through the mountain plains, and the soft voices of the Von Trapp children could be heard once again in the Trapp Villa.

A cast of students from Wapakoneta City Schools filled the Wapakoneta Performing Arts Center this weekend to perform the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical “The Sound of Music” under the direction of Todd Christopher.

For Wapakoneta High School senior Kelsey Barrett playing Maria was the last time she performed on stage in a major school production.
