Charlyine E. Kantner, 88, of Wapakoneta, died at 5:26 p.m. Monday, Jan. 7, 2013, at her residence surrounded by her family.
She was born in New Knoxville, the daughter of Louetta (Wiethoff) and Harold J. Kuck, who preceded her in death. On Feb. 2, 1944, she married Luther R. Kantner, and he passed away on Jan. 25, 2006.
Steven Wayne Leiss, 61, of Quincy, passed away at 4:07 p.m. Monday, Jan. 7, 2013, surrounded by family and friends at his home.
He was born Sept. 2, 1951, in Sidney, the son of Lova Ella (Watkins) and Clarence Elmer Leiss. He was preceded in death by his father. His mother survives in Sidney. On Dec. 17, 2010, he married Yvonne Annette Ward Fair, who survives in Quincy.
The Wapakoneta girls basketball team was overpowered by the visiting Liberty Benton Eagles, as they fell, 54-36.
Liberty Benton’s Katie Simon had 28 points on the night, dominating the paint. Simon’s play was not limited to the paint, as she was able to step back and hit a couple 3-pointers.
Wapakoneta varsity coach Rusty Allen said Simon’s play was the focus of their pregame preparation.
A year after a powerful wind storm hit Auglaize County, local officials are making plans for a full-scale training exercise to become better prepared should such an event strike again.
The June 29 windstorm left sections of Auglaize County without power for days and caused substantial damage, but the focus for emergency responders taking part in the training is to improve communications
BOTKINS — Botkins Mayor Steve Woodruff delivered a brief “State of the Village” address during Tuesday’s Botkins Village Council meeting.

Edith V. âEdieâ Jeanneret, 90, ofWapakoneta, died at 10:14 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013, at the Lima Memorial Hospital emergency room.
She was born Dec. 11, 1922, in Elida, to Mathilda Miller and Cecil Keeling. On March 11, 1943, she married Reneâ Jeanneret Sr., and he preceded her in death Nov. 23, 1977.
Jerry Wenning, 74, of Van Wert, went to be with his Lord and Savior Monday, Dec. 31, 2012, at Leesburg Regional Medical Center in Leesburg, Fla.
He was born in Wapakoneta, the son of the late June (Pfenning) and William âBillâ Wenning, who preceded him in death. In Wapakoneta, he married Alice (Oen) Wenning, who survives him in Van Wert.
Telephone Service Co. (TSC) and Middle Point Home Telephone Co. (MPH) officials announced a merger Monday as TSC purchased the stock of the Van Wert-based telephone company.
TSC acquired the company and will pay MPH shareholders cash for their shares. The deal is subject to customary terms and conditions and is expected to be finalized in the first quarter of 2013.
