Kids learn about safety

An annual cooperative effort between local authorities, businesses and the fire department brings valuable safety lessons to area children.

The 12th annual Safety Day, which was held this week at the Wapakoneta Family YMCA, calls on the expertise of safety-service professionals from the Wapakoneta Fire Department, the Auglaize County DARE program, Wapakoneta Police Department and Auglaize County Sheriff’s Office to help lead different programs for the school-aged children.    

Challenge sheds pounds, awards ‘losers’

ST. MARYS — Participants of the Grand Health Challenge and Grand Health Family Challenge are all “losers,” having shed more than two tons over the past six months.

Wapakoneta Daily News Publisher Deb Zwez announced Thursday night between the 51 teams in the Grand Health Challenge and the seven teams in the Grand Health Family Challenge that finished, 4,536.73 pounds were lost.

“If you do the math, 4,536.73 pounds were lost by the participants,” Zwez said. “That’s pretty darn awesome. Good job everybody.”

A chance career turns into profession

Taking a chance on a college course of study led a recently retired Wapakoneta teacher to a career she loved.

When Deb Madden went to college, she intended to pursue a degree in elementary education and become a teacher, but she was part of a group advised that because of a recent influx in the position, they most likely would have trouble finding jobs. One of the alternative fields suggested to her was speech therapy.

Christine Leigh Cvetanovich, 51, 816 Townview Drive, St. Marys, died at 11:59 p.m. Thursday, May 31, 2012, at St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima.
She was born Sept. 11, 1960, in Chicago, the daughter of Eleanor (Hojnacki) and Frank Carlson. On Oct. 24, 1998, in Marietta, Ga., she married Michael L. Cvetanovich, who survives.
Private family services will be held.
Arrangements are entrusted to Miller Funeral Home in St. Marys.

Land contract: Consultant agreement under review

The work of an industrial site consultant and realtor is under review by a city-supported business organization to determine if they would recommend renewing the contract for another year.

A Wapakoneta Area Economic Development Council (WAEDC) ad-hoc committee is reviewing contract terms between the city of Wapakoneta and CB Richard Ellis, an international real estate firm with 90 industrial brokers and 150 offices throughout the world, before recommending, if any, changes to the one-year contract.

Hunger Day brings awareness

Today marks a day to recognize the hungry.

June 7 is declared “National Hunger Awareness Day” by the U.S. Senate. Millions of Americans struggle with hunger and food insecurities — and a study done in 2010 states 6,000 of those people live in Auglaize County.

A local food pantry is recognizing this national day.
