Local to march after oath

With an alumni on the presidential ballot, members of the Miami University Marching Band thought it would be worth a shot to submit an application to participate in the inauguration parade, one Redhawks band member says.

When former Gov. Mitt Romney and his running mate U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan, a Miami University graduate, lost, those same band members believed their chances were nil.

Native selected as college VP

A former Wapakoneta resident is serving his first full semester as vice president of academic affairs and dean of faculty at a Pennsylvania college.

As a member of the senior administrative team at Washington & Jefferson College, Dr. John Zimmerman’s responsibilities include all aspects of academic affairs, including faculty, curriculum, library, study abroad, advising, and some aspects of instructional technology.

Students talk Christmas

A local second-grade student says Christmas is all about giving and making others happy.

Wapakoneta Elementary School student Tagen Patterson says she is looking forward to Christmas this year.

“It’s (Christmas) is about giving,” Tagen said. “I like giving because it makes me feel happy.”

Tagen noted the holiday focuses on giving and spreading happiness.

“Some people don’t get to celebrate Christmas, so I get to give them a gift to make them feel happy,” Tagen said.

Students helping others during holidays

As many as 300 Wapakoneta High School students have given back to others this holiday season in a myriad of ways throughout the community.

“I believe that it is important for our staff and our kids to be active in our community at all times, especially around the Christmas season,” Wapakoneta High School Principal Aaron Rex said. “Our students are able to learn about what community service is and how to help others who may be in need whether it is a medical condition or financial need.

United Way expects 5K shortfall

ST MARYS — The United Way of Auglaize County was approximately $50,000 shy of its $350,000 fundraising goal as of Wednesday, but organizers are projecting only a $5,000 to $7,000 shortfall by the time corporate payroll-deduction giving is included, which represents small donations from individuals.

Violet L. Hardin, 92

December 21, 2012

Violet L. Hardin, 92, of Wapakoneta, died at 4:43 a.m. Dec. 20, 2012, at OtterbeinCridersville.

She was born Oct. 5, 1920, in Auglaize County, to Violet L. (Kohlhorst) and Raymond I. Coates who preceded her in death.  On Aug. 2, 1941, she married Paul R. Hardin and he passed away Nov. 4, 1980.

Mary Lou Gill, 85

December 21, 2012

Mary Lou Gill, 85, died  at 6:10 a.m. Friday at Wapakoneta Manor.

She was born June 23, 1927, in Harrod, to Edna G. Mowery and Fred R. Conkle.

On July 14, 1945, she married Raymond E. Gill and he preceded her in death in July 1971.

Survivors include a son, Al (Susan) Gill, of Wapakoneta; a daughter, Beverly (Dennis) Vernon, of Wapakoneta; four grandchildren, Melissa (Randy) Rentz, Matthew Gill, Brian (Amber) Vernon, Lindsay (Benjamin) Stachowicz; and four great-grandchildren, Joshua, Nathan, Andrew and Madilyn Ann.
