KENTON — Both the Wapakoneta Redskins varsity boys and girls cross country teams finished seventh overall in the Western Buckeye League meet Saturday at the Hardin County Fairgrounds in Kenton.
Wapak’s top boys finisher was senior Caleb Hennon, who placed 17th individually with a time of 18:08.
Freshman Hayden Brandenhoff finished 36th with a 19:03.
Rounding out the Wapak top seven were sophomore Sam Harrod (52nd, 19:29), freshman Sam Bowers (57th, 19:43), junior John Martin (58th, 19:44), sophomore Billy Butler (64th, 20:03) and junior Ryan O’Neil (69th, 20:16).
VAN WERT — It wasn’t the greatest of starts.
Fortunately for the Wapakoneta Redskins, the Van Wert Cougars aren’t the greatest of football teams.
Wapak fumbled the ball away on two if its first three plays but bounced back and dominated in a 77-12 shellacking of the Cougars in a Western Buckeye League game Friday night at Eggerss Stadium in Van Wert.
The Redskins’ 77 points eclipsed the previous single-game scoring record of 62 points set in a win over Perry in 1967.
The Redskins remained unbeaten on the season at 8-0 overall and 7-0 in the WBL. Van Wert is 0-8, 0-7.
WAYNESFIELD — The Waynesfield-Goshen Tigers bounced back from a tough Week 7 loss to knock off the rival Upper Scioto Valley Rams 46-21 on Friday night in Waynesfield.
W-G used a strong defensive effort to improve to 5-3 overall and 4-0 in the Northwest Central Conference.
The Tigers defense was lead by sophomore Gabe Wilcox, who had two interceptions with 72 return yards and one touchdown.
“He is a special player and I am looking forward to watch him do some more spectacular things in the next two years,” W-G coach Gary Spencer said.
Eva M. Briggs, 92, of Wapakoneta, died at 2:42 p..m. Sunday, Oct. 16, 2011, at Wapakoneta Manor.
Arrangements are incomplete at Bayliff & Eley Funeral Home in Wapakoneta.
Fred G. Swartz, 77, 11103 Ohio 364, St. Marys, died 12:35 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, 2011, at his residence.
He was born April 5, 1934,, in St. Marys, the son of Cynthia (Davis) and Sam Swartz. On Nov. 24, 1954, he married Janet Quellhorst and she survives at the residence.
He is survived by two sons, Gary Swartz, of St. Marys and Sam Swartz , of Dublin.
Services are at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Miller Funeral Home in St. Marys, with the Rev. Dr. Ed Bray, officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at Elm Grove Cemetery.
Roy A. McMurray, 96, of St. Marys, died at 2 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 16, 2011, at his home.
He was born Feb. 4, 1915, in Celina, to Imogene (Eshelman) and Arthur McMurray. On Sept. 3, 1980, he married Norma Jean Horn Turner, who survives.
Services are at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Cisco Funeral Home in St. Marys, with the Rev. Harold Liess officiating. Burial with graveside services conducted by the St. Marys American Legion Post 323 and Disabled American Veterans will follow at Elm Grove Cemetery in St. Marys.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Robert Lee Haller, 86, a resident of Wyngate Retirement Community in Lima and formerly a resident of Otterbein-St. Marys, died at 2:48 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, 2011, at Lima Memorial Health Systems following an extended illness.
He was born Jan. 9, 1925, in Kossuth, the son of Hazel Chesta Gross and Albert Theodore Haller. On June 1, 1946, he married Grace Irene Boyer, who survives.
Mary E. “Nana” Van Etten, 89, of Van Wert, died at 7:55 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, 2011, at Van Wert Inpatient Hospice.
She was born Jan. 23, 1922, in Wapakoneta, the daughter of Blanche M. (Bryan) and Adrian M. Meier. She married Thomas D. Van Etten Jr., who preceded her in death.
Joleen Bowdle, 66 of Cridersville, died at 3:23 a.m., Friday, October 14, 2011, in the emergency room at Lima Memorial Health System.
She was born Oct. 28, 1944, at home in Columbus Grove, Ohio. She is the daughter of Mary E. (Hofffman) and Elmer L. Kohli. Both parents are deceased. On June 25, 1980 she married Richard M. “Dick” Bowdle at St. Mark’s Church in Clay Township, who survives in Cridersville.
People may have come for all different reasons but most of those attending and peddling their wares at the Wapakoneta Craft Show on Saturday left happy.
For a St. Marys woman, craft shows have allowed her family to maintain their level of living and stay in their home after her husband lost his job a year ago.
A mother of four, Stacey Stephens, has perfected the art of not just diaper cakes, but diaper creations including diaper four- wheelers.
