Projects slated for grants

Much of the remaining Homeland Security grant money is to be spent to continue with existing projects.

Auglaize County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) Director Troy Anderson said members of the Auglaize County Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) are working to determine how best to use the remaining money from the grants. They are expected to move forward with their options during their next meeting in March.

Park dugouts tabled

Replacing dugouts at Veterans Memorial Park is delayed at least a month as more information can be obtained from the city’s insurance company, but Wapakoneta’s recreation director does not want to wait too long because he would like them ready for the spring sports season in April.

During Monday’s Wapakoneta City Recreation Board meeting, Recreation Director Jack Hayzlett presented two estimates to replace dugouts on the two larger baseball diamonds, where one first base dugout and one third base dugout were destroyed during the June 29 windstorm.

Locals invited to help contribute to flood exhibit

The Auglaize County Historical Society staff is taking on a project of an event that dates back 100 years ago — and one that affected the whole state of Ohio.

The Historical Society is launching an effort to document the Flood of 1913 — which is known as the greatest natural disaster in Ohio history, according to Ohio History Central, a project of the Ohio Historical Society.

Evelyn L. Shaw, 82

Evelyn L. Shaw, 82, of Lima, died Sunday, January 13, 2013, at her residence.
She was born Aug. 9, 1930 in Delphos, the daughter of the late Naomi Mamie (Stettler) amd Robert Van Furry. On Sept. 2, 1951 she married Bill F. Shaw who died Jan. 22, 1996.
Arrangements are being completed at Bayliff & Son Funeral Home, Cridersville.

Ruth C. Burk, 74

January 15, 2013

Ruth C. Burk, 74, of Cridersville, died Sunday morning, January 13, 2013, at her residence. She was born March 22, 1938, in Earle, Ariz., the daughter of Nellie (Andrews) and Clyde Clayton, who preceded her in death. On Sept. 26, 1956, she married Donald E. Burk, and he survives.

Box Tops for iPads

For two Wapakoneta Elementary School students, they spent part of their holiday break practicing math problems — and they were excited about doing them because a new Christmas present made it fun.

Sisters Audrey and Hanna Sparks used their iPads over the holidays to hone their skills in mathematics. They also can use them for language arts and history as well as other subjects.

Wilker state queen

ST. MARYS — A member of Auglaize County Junior Fair royalty now has a new crown to add to her collection.

University of Dayton freshman Sarah Wilker took home the title of Ohio Fairs Queen for 2013 following a competition during the first week of January in Columbus. Wilker qualified for the event when she was named the 2012 Auglaize County Junior Fair queen in July.

Area woman needs heart, local man a hero

For the typical person turning 21, their birthday is a day of celebration as they enter the next phase of adulthood.

For Botkins native Rachel Doseck, she had to celebrate her 21st birthday on Sunday in the Intensive Care Unit at the Cleveland Clinic on the hospital’s transplant list.

Giving 'Kash for Kibera'

Eighth-graders at Wapakoneta High School are working together to make a change in how students 8,000 miles away are learning.

“We’re trying to raise money to make a school,” Kacey Gerlach said.

She and a friend, Lacey Hayes, said they were touched by seeing all the pictures of young children in Africa who need their help.

The girls, who are helping to advertise for a drive to raise money to build a school in Africa, said they want to bring in as much money as possible.

Buckland considers income tax

BUCKLAND — A new tax will soon be coming to Buckland residents. And village leaders would like to have another tax generating income.

Buckland Village Council members approved Thursday the first reading of an ordinance establishing a 1 percent income tax to residents.
