A new cruiser topped the list of budget requests for the Auglaize County sheriff in 2012.
In presenting his requests Thursday to the Auglaize County commissioners, Sheriff Al Solomon’s proposed budget of more than $4.3 million is $56,000, or a 1 percent increase, from 2011.
Included in the budget was a $5,000 increase to $95,000 for law enforcement supplies, a $5,000 increase to $200,000 for jail supplies, and a $6,500 increase to $16,500 for jail equipment.
With the city’s debt accounts funded for the final two years of payments, the Wapakoneta City Council Finance Committee chair intends the general fund money paid into those accounts in the past can finally pay for other needed equipment.
Councilor-at-large Wilbur Wells and his fellow Finance Committee members reviewed debt funds and various other city accounts during Thursday’s budget meeting held at the Wapakoneta City Administration Building.

Ned A. Glass, 72, 710 Stoneybrook Dr., St. Marys, died at 6:37 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2011, at Lima Memorial Health System.
He was born March 11, 1939, in Noble Township, Auglaize County, the son of Ruth (Rasneor) and Ivan “Mike” Glass. On Dec. 26, 1959, at St. Peter’s Evangelical & Reformed Church in New Bremen, he married Christine F. Richey, who survives.
Also surviving are a son, Michael Glass, and two daughters, Christi Mae Buehler, and Angela L. Glass, all of St. Marys.
He was preceded in death by two sons, Dougie Allen Glass and Jeffie Allen Glass.
Charles “Roger” McKinniss, 80, of Ray, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2011, at the Laurels of Worthington.
He was born Sept. 13, 1931, in Coalton, the son of the late Frances Clark McCamic and Charles McKinniss. He married Rosemary Mehrle McKinniss, who survives.
Also survivng are two sons, Charles McKinniss and Eric (Tammy) McKinniss; three daughters, Kathleen McKinniss, Amelia McKinniss and Jennifer (Ken) Padgett; two brothers, Larry (Rosemary) McKinniss and Chester McKinniss; a sister, Crystal (Don) Cook; 21 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
Gladys L. Kidd, 68, of Wapakoneta, died at 12:20 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2011, at her residence, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born July 26, 1943, in Toledo, the daughter of Florence (Mosher) and Frederick Siglow, who preceded her in death. She married Lawrence Kidd, and he survives in Columbus.
With Wall Street profits back, a new federal initiative should help residents on Main Street with their finances, a U.S. legislator says.
Democratic U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown addressed the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s (CFPB) “Know Before You Owe” initiative which should make credit card and mortgage terms easier to understand, would explain key prices, and would be written in plain language without legal jargon as well as be shorter in length. A prototype created by CFPB is two pages, much shorter than the industry average of 5,000 words.
With a requested budget for 2012 nearly the same as last year for the Auglaize County Veterans Services Commission, the biggest surprise came when officers said they were considering not coming back to the Auglaize County Administration Building.
“Our office is very, very busy as you know,” Auglaize County Veterans Services Director Doug Howard said. “We love where we are. If we could stay out there we would.”
The Auglaize County engineer submitted a figure he did not expect to get when he requested more than $10.4 million for his 2012 budget.
His appeal stressed the county’s need.
The request is approximately $5 million more than the revenue in the Motor Vehicle and Gasoline Tax Fund for 2011.
“I know I’m not going to get it, but this is to reflect the need,” county Engineer Doug Reinhart told the Auglaize County Commissioners during his budget hearing on Wednesday. “I do this every year. It looks like I’m asking for the world, but we need it.”
At first glance, the opening weekend of the Wapakoneta Redskins varsity boys basketball season looks a lot like the opening weekend a year ago — a win over a not-so-good Piqua team on Friday followed by a loss to a very good Fort Recovery squad on Saturday.

To anyone who was actually paying attention, however, this is not the same Redskins team.
With as many as four sophomores starting at times and with Alex Greve sidelined by an injury, the 2010-2011 Wapak team went on to lose 11 of its next 12 games.

Bazaars are the best kind of holiday gatherings. These sweet events are a showcase of taste-tempting, time-tested favorites.
As December kicks off, so do holiday bazaars. One of note is United Methodist Women's annual Christmas Bazaar in Merced, Calif. That this church tradition is in its 81st year is impressive. What's more remarkable is that the grand dame of this event will be 98 years old in January.
