WAYNESFIELD — The seconds ticked down toward zero on the clock with the Waynesfield-Goshen Tigers trailing 45-44 in the opening game of the 2011-12 varsity boys basketball season.
With the Tigers in possession of the ball, they rotated the ball down to a sophomore appearing in his first-every varsity game — an unlikely hero at this stage of the game and season.
Colton Miller drove the base line, put up and off-balance shot and watched the ball snap the strings as the buzzer sounded.
BELLEFONTAINE — The Botkins Trojans opened their varsity boys basketball season with a 67-57 win over the Mechanicsburg Indians on Friday night in the opening round of the Benjamin Logan Tip-Off Tournament.
Botkins jumped out to a 14-7 lead in the first quarter and led 28-21 at the half.
Senior Ethan Zimpfer hit a pair of 3-pointers in the third quarter as the Trojans maintained their advantage.
Botkins won the game at the free-throw line, hitting on 14-of-21 attempts in the fourth quarter.
The Trojans’ Heath Geyer led all scorers in scoring with 20 points.

Reservations are being taken for an annual holiday meal which serves hundreds in need in the community.
From its beginnings 16 years ago at Riverview Community Center, formerly the Rec Center, with dinner served for 80, the Miracle Meal has grown to serve approximately 500 during last year’s meal.
With the slowdown in economic conditions continuing, even more participants are expected for this year’s meal, which has become a community tradition to which people look forward.

The goal of a book club targeted to high school students has one main purpose — to be fun.
The coordinator of the book club, hosted by the Auglaize County Public District Library and in its third year, says the club “has been very successful.”
“High schoolers are so busy and the book club is something we wanted to start and see what happens,” Auglaize County Public District Library Youth Services Coordinator Beth Steiner said. “So far, we have had a good turnout and good feedback.”

After months of negotiations failing to result in an agreement, Wapakoneta City Schools Board of Education members approved a resolution declaring its intent to implement its final offer to teachers beginning Jan. 1.
Local residents and businesses have been recognized for outstanding achievements and volunteer service to a nationwide organization.
The Indiana-Ohio Region of American Red Cross Blood Services recently hosted its annual recognition luncheon, with one of the recipients having hit a milestone — by donating 24 gallons of blood in her lifetime.
Wapakoneta resident and the “Outstanding Blood Donor Award” winner for Auglaize County, Rita Tebbe, 84, has donated approximately 192 times to date, and has donated 24 gallons of blood, which translates to helping approximately 576 people.
Starting in 2014, Ohio school districts are to be use new state tests of common core curriculum.
The new tests are to be implemented in 45 states and the District of Columbia, but they come with a catch, they must be taken online, replacing the traditional paper and pencil standardized tests Ohio students have been taking.
Patricia R. “Pat” Wagner, 80, of Wapakoneta, died at 4:53 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 1, 2011, at St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born Dec. 6. 1930, in Hancock County, the daughter of Treva (Pheneger) and Arthur “Ed” DeLong, who preceded her in death. On July 23, 1950, she married Russell M. “Shorty” Wagner, and he died May 16, 1990.
Franklin R. Rostorfer, 76, of rural Wapakoneta, died Wednesday morning, Nov. 30, 2011, from injuries sustained in an auto accident on Ohio 235, in Logan County.
He was born Aug. 8, 1935, in Clay Township, Auglaize County, the son of Margaret (Cook) and Clifford Rostorfer, who preceded him in death. On March 3, 1962, he married Judy A. Metz, and she survives.
