Fulfilling a bet

To fulfill a bet regarding the sale of United Way of Auglaize County reverse raffle tickets, the organization's director wagered shaving his head bald if all the tickets were sold.

The tickets were sold in less than a week.

Today, Executive Director Randy Fisher paid the bet with short hair trimmed to the scalp.

Prior to his head being shaved, he said, "I regret that I only have one head of hair to give to my county." For a photograph of him clean shaven, see Friday's edition of the Wapakoneta Daily News.

The addition of 44 provisional ballots to Auglaize County election tallies did not change the outcome of any races or issues.
Auglaize County Elections Board Director Carolyn Campbell said they did confirm that there would be an automatic recount for the St. Marys councilor-at-large race between Dan Uhlenhake, who ended up with 590 votes, and Russell Bailey with 583 votes.

BFA celebrates Ohio built tractors

Buckeye Farm Antiques (BFA) officials say they are hoping for the best event yet as the organization hosts the 24th annual Tractor and Gas Engine Show this Memorial Day weekend at the Auglaize County Fairgrounds.

Redskins named to all-league lists

Four Wapakoneta Redskins made the Western Buckeye League first-team list, tied for most in the league with Shawnee.

In baseball, Johnny Crawford and Chandler Kaeck made the first team list.

Crawford is the No. 1 pitcher for the Redskins and the centerfielder on his off days. He is a dynamic southpaw that is a threat on the mound and at the plate. Crawford has committed to play college baseball at Bowling Green State University.

Help is on the way

Viewing the damage from the tornado that struck Moore, Okla. Monday is almost unimaginable for most people, but resident who lives there says to sit through the storm was even more treacherous.

Diane Brandehoff, a native of Ada, saidthe EF5 tornado is an event she will never forget.

At least 24 people, including nine children, were killed by the tornado, measured at 1.3 miles wide at parts, that went through the heart of the community. More than 230 people were injured by the storm and at least 100 have been pulled alive from the storm.

EMA official: Emergency plan should be developed now

With a weather pattern conducive to creating tornadoes across the Plains states in the past few days and moving into the Midwest today, an Auglaize County official says the present is a good time to develop or to review household emergency plans for future inclement weather.

Auglaize County Emergency Management Agency Director Troy Anderson predicts the summer of 2013 to be similar to 2012 with more storms likely based on reports issued by national climatologists.

Dog shelter contract OK'd

Electing to add six of eight alternates in addition to the base bid, costs for a new dog shelter still remain under the estimate of $460,000.

“We checked with our bidders and went through the numbers,” said architect Brad Garmann, of the firm Garmann-Miller & Associates. “Heyne went through the numbers and they are comfortable with a base bid of $381,600.”
