Candace Newland, 41

April 3, 2013

Candace M. “Candy” Newland, 41, of Waynesfield, left us to be with the Lord at 5:10 p.m. Easter Sunday, March 31, 2013, at Lima Memorial Health System.
She was born April 20, 1971, in Lima, the daughter of Charoletteann (Howland) and Arnold R. Tippie III. Her mother & step-father, Robert Moye, survive in Waynesfield, and her father is deceased. On Feb. 16, 1994, she married Scott A. Newland Sr., and he survives.

Jack Tidd, 74

Jack H. Tidd, 74, of Montra, passed away on Easter Sunday evening, March 31, 2013, after a very courageous battle with cancer at home surrounded by his family.
Jack was born on May 15, 1938, in Jackson Center, the son of the late Violet (Miller) and Robert Tidd. On Dec. 1, 1962, he married Margaret E. Schumann. During their 50 years of marriage they had many great memories of traveling and spending time with family and friends.

Corridor cash sought

After applying a federal grant rewarded to the city last year to a street project, Wapakoneta city administrators have resubmitted work on the Heritage Park river walkway project for a similar grant — and they have good indications they may receive the funds.

Wapakoneta City Council members heard the first reading to apply for $2.14 million in a Transportation Alternative Program (TAP) grant through the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT).

K-9 deputy earns honor

A deputy with the Auglaize County Sheriff’s Office has been recognized as the top law enforcement officer in the district by a district service organization.

K-9 Deputy Mike Peterson, who has been with the Sheriff’s Office full-time for 17 years was named “Law Enforcement Officer of the Year” for 2012-2013 for the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) District 2. He has served as K-9 officer for the Sheriff’s Office since 2006.

Peterson said the award was humbling.

Cancer support group forms in county

County residents who have been touched by cancer now have a local support group to which they can turn.

The Cancer Association of Auglaize County is forming a cancer support group with the mission of being a resource for survivors, those battling the disease and family and relatives of people with cancer to come together.

Hunting for eggs

ST. JOHNS — Twenty lucky kids spent the afternoon picking up Easter eggs at St. Johns United Methodist Church.

With only 20 children showing up to scamper around the grounds to pick up 1,000 eggs, the numbers divided out for each children collecting many eggs,  looking for extra bags, baskets, or whatever else they could find to fit them all in when their initial container quickly filled.

While Wapakoneta City Council members are preparing to hear the second reading of an ordinance applying for $500,000 for a third round of federal grant money for Safe Routes to Schools, councilors will hear the first reading of an ordinance to proceed with plans for the second round of Safe Routes to Schools funds.

‘No Roof’ to be left behind

Frost Roofing Inc. in Wapakoneta will give a completely new roof to a lucky winner.

Frost Roofing Inc. owners J.J. and Sarah Smithey recently announced they will participate in the No Roof Left Behind program, in which a homeowner will be selected to have their roof done for free.

“We had been searching for a way to give back to the community,” Sarah Smithey said. “This way, we didn’t have to reinvent the wheel.”
