After a Wapakoneta resident talked with his granddaughter about the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School, he decided to replace some of his Christmas display this season with a memorial to the 20 children and six adults who perished at the school.
Larry Shaffer, a retired pastor, placed a cross with a white bow, an angel blowing a horn and a harp, all in white lights, in his front yard as a memorial. He said his 6-year-old granddaughter, Ella, wanted a way to show the families she was sorry for what had happened to the children Friday in the deadly shooting incident.
In the fall of 1982, Carlene Koch answered a help wanted advertisement in the Wapakoneta Daily News to serve as clerk for Wapakoneta City Council.
On Monday during the last regular scheduled meeting of 2012, she bid farewell after more than 30 years serving in the position.
“I am going to miss the council members,” Koch said before breaking into a small chuckle, “but I don’t think I am going to miss the two meetings a month to keep the minutes.”
The Wapakoneta City Schools is extremely saddened about the events in Connecticut and our thoughts and prayers go out the the communities, school and families impacted by this tragedy. The Wapakoneta City Schools will be hosting a School Safety discussion open to the parents and the community on Wednesday evening at 6 pm in the Performing Arts Center. School and law enforcement officials will be in attendance. The purpose of this meeting is to explain what precautions we currently have in place, to answer questions if possible and perhaps hear any ideas for improved security provisions.
