Wapakoneta to show progress in scrimmage

The start of the 2014 high school football regular season is less than two weeks away.

First, however, in less than 24 hours, the Wapakoneta Redskins will face their first instance of live, opposing competition, as Wapakoneta will host the Lima Central Catholic Thunderbirds in a scrimmage starting at 10 a.m. Saturday at Harmon Field.

The Redskins will demonstrate Saturday the initial results of summer weightlifting and conditioning, followed by team practices and instruction sessions in July and August.

Daniel L. “Dan” Schneider, 97

Daniel L. “Dan” Schneider, 97, of Wapakoneta, died at 3:32 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 14, 2014, at Joint Township District Memorial Hospital, St. Marys.

He was born on Nov. 30, 1916, in Auglaize County, to Michael and Catherine (Brunn) Schneider, who preceded him in death. On Nov. 25, 1937, he married Mary L. Truesdale and she passed away on Dec. 26, 1979.

Legal help sought on gun issue

WAYNESFIELD — The Waynesfield-Goshen Board of Education has sought legal counsel regarding the issue of whether or not to allow a trained employee to carry a firearm on school grounds.

Mark Jackson, an attorney with the law firm Pepple & Waggoner, attended the regular W-G board meeting Monday to discuss the types of policy and procedure that would need to be implemented if the board decides to arm an employee.

Shops celebrate ‘dog days’

The Auglaize County Humane Society does a lot for homeless pets in the area and the time, money and work that goes into keeping these animals safe, happy and healthy before finding a forever home is important.

To help lend a helping hand to the humane society the Wapakoneta Antique and Specialty Shops, or WASS, is running a promotion throughout the month of August to take in donations from community members to help support the humane society.

Dubbed the "Dog Days of Summer," local WASS shops are looking for items to donate to the humane society.

Local cheerleader to make jump across pond

A local cheerleader says she is going big places, and, after winning an “All American” award with Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA), she is starting with the New Year’s Parade in London at the start of the year.

Abbey Gibson, 17, has been cheering for about nine years, starting with midget football cheerleading, and now a senior on the Wapakoneta Varsity Cheerleading.

Board preps for November

Prepping for the Nov. 4 general election has commenced.

The Auglaize County Board of Elections met Wednesday morning to take action on a number of items dealing with precincts, precinct election officials, or PEOs, and upcoming training for PEOs.

An idea presented by the Ohio Secretary of State, Jon Husted, is being implemented by the board for this election.

The position of a multi-precinct voting location manager was approved for the New Bremen polling location which consists of three precincts.

Vapor comes to Wapakoneta

A new business in downtown Wapakoneta is offering residents an alternative to cigarettes.

Dew Vapor, located on 3 Perry St., opened its doors Monday. The business, owned by Celina resident Donald Warden, specializes in selling electronic cigarettes, e-liquids and accessories. Warden also owns Grand Lake Vapor in Celina, which opened in November 2012.

Local artists invited to exhibit their work

Attention local artists — Riverside Art Center in downtown Wapakoneta is accepting work from craftspeople ranging in all age and experience levels to be exhibited in this year’s Annual Greater Wapakoneta Community Art Exhibit.

Artists are encouraged to bring up to seven works of art to the juried show, including watercolor, acrylic and oil paintings, pencil and ink drawings, and carving, jewelry or other 3D art forms. Photographs will not be accepted.

Wayman wins county tournament

Drew Wayman captured an individual title Wednesday, as the Wapakoneta Redskins senior shot a 74 to lead all players in the Auglaize County Open.

Wayman and the Redskins placed third out of six teams with a 360 team score Wednesday in their second straight tournament in as many days at Arrowhead Golf Club in Minster.

“He was solid all day today,” Wapakoneta coach Kenny Wayman said Wednesday about his son, Drew. “He battled a few holes that his drive got away from him but battled back mentally and ended up with a very good round.”

Highway dedicated to hero

WAYNESFIELD — Speaking to a crowd of more than 50 people who gathered to honor his son’s life, Chris Zimmerman, father of the late Sonny Zimmerman, said Tuesday’s highway dedication ceremony was a happy day for him and his family.

“Three years ago today, almost to the hour, my son returned from his first tour,” Chris Zimmerman said. “It’s fitting we do this today because that was a happy day, just as this is.”
