The Wapakoneta Redskins varsity girls golf team defeated the Indian Lake Lakers 213-222 in its first dual match of the season Monday at Wapakoneta Country Club.
Shelby Kohler led the Redskins with a round of 45. Indian Lakeâ€™s Morgan Barnett turned in a 42 to edge Kohler for medalist honors.
â€śShelby hit the ball well, she just had a little trouble with her shots around the green,â€ť Wapak coach Dawn West said. â€śShe is making some changes with her pitching and chipping so it wonâ€™t be long before she is more comfortable around the greens. I was very pleased with her round.â€ť
LIMA â€” The Wapakoneta Redskins varsity boys golf team finished a disappointing fifth in the Rob Contini Memorial tournament Monday at Hawthorne Hills golf course in Lima.
Lima Central Catholic won the event with a team score of 306. Wapak turned in a 361.
â€śWe didnâ€™t play very well. We had a few mental errors that cost us a few strokes,â€ť Wapak coach Ken Wayman said.
Bobby Crow led the Redskins with a team-best 86. Josh Apple shot an 89. Aaron Johnson recorded a 92. Drew Wayman turned in a 94. And Marshall Gerlach carded a 99.
After missing much of the week of practice due to an injury, Waynesfield-Goshen product Joe Horn sat out the Indianapolis Colts preseason-opening 33-10 loss to the St. Louis Rams on Saturday night.
According to the Indianapolis Star, Horn was sidelined by a nagging back injury.
The Colts signed Horn as an undrafted free agent on July 26 after the NFL lockout ended.

The Wapak Football Parents will be holding a chicken dinner on Friday, Aug. 19 prior to the scrimmage with Minster and Triad.
The dinners are prepared by the American Legion and include a half chicken, applesauce, chips, and roll and butter. The presale ticket price is $7.
Pick up time is 4:30-6:30 at the west entrance to Harmon Field, with drive-up service on Hamilton St.

DEFIANCE â€” The Wapakoneta Redskins girls golf team placed 12th in the 17-team Defiance Invitational on Thursday at the Auglaize Golf Club.
Shawnee was the overall winner, posting a team score of 332. Lima Central Catholic was second at 346.
Wapak carded a 407.
â€śI thought the ladies played pretty good today,â€ť Wapak coach Dawn West said. â€śWe scored better than Tuesday overall but finished higher with a 12th place finish. There were more good caliber teams there today but I felt we held our own and did a nice job out there coming down seven shots from Tuesday.
CELINA â€” The Botkins Trojans varsity boys golf team finished a close second in a quad match Thursday at the Mercer County Elks Golf Club in Celina.
Botkins turned in a team score of 178, just one stroke behind winner Mississinawa Valleyâ€™s 177.
Fort Recovery was third at 187 and Houston fourth with a 218.
Adam Bornhorst led Botkins with a 38. Connor Bornhorst carded a 44. Seth Hanna turned in a 47. And Cory Kies rounded out the Trojansâ€™ scoring with a 49.
The Trojans return to action Tuesday morning at 8:30 at New Bremen.
Six teams â€” five golfers each â€” and 18 holes.
And one stroke.
Thatâ€™s the margin that separated the top three teams in the Auglaize County varsity boys golf tournament Wednesday at a soggy Wapakoneta Country Club.
The Minster Wildcats took the title after tying the Wapakoneta Redskins with matching team scores of 345. Under the tie-breaker rules, the match is then decided by the scores of the No. 5 golfers on each team.
Minsterâ€™s Xavier Francis turned in an 89 while Wapakâ€™s Josh Apple carded a 96, handing the win to Minster.
CELINA â€” The Wapakoneta Redskins varsity girls golf team opened its 2011 season by finishing 6th in the 12-team Celina Invitational on Tuesday at The Foxâ€™s Den in Celina.
Wapak compiled a team score of 412. The Shawnee Indians won the event with a 337.
Sophomore Shelby Kohler fired a 94 to lead the way for the Redskins. Senior Courtney Knippen was right behind with a 95.
Junior Hannah Smith carded a 101 and sophomore Bryly Beaman turned in a 122 to round out the scoring for Wapakoneta.
PIQUA â€” The Wapakoneta Redskins boys golf team opened its 2011 season at the 25th Anniversary Homan Invitational Tournament on Monday in Piqua.
Wapak placed 14th out of the 18 teams competing.
Minster placed first with a 318, followed by Troy at 323 and Sidney Lehman with a 324. Lehmanâ€™s Ben Theiman took medalist honors with a 71.
The Redskins are trying to rebuild after losing four of five golfers from 2010 to graduation.
â€śI was pleased how we played,â€ť Wapak coach Ken Wayman said. â€śWe had four golfers that are underclassman that never played the course.â€ť
WAYNESFIELD â€” Fortville, Indianaâ€™s Jonathan Hendrick used his outside front row starting spot to grab the Jack Hewitt Classic win for the second straight year Saturday night at Waynesfield raceway Park.
Hendrick held off Justin Grant, who earlier in the evening set the new track record for the Non-Wing Sprint Cars at Waynesfield with a time of 11.827 seconds.
Matt Westfall, the 2009 Jack Hewitt Classic winner, came home third.
Rod Henning, of Middletown, picked up the win in the Mini-Sprintafter getting by Nick Daugherty on lap 9 of the 15 lap affair. Daugherty would finish 2nd.
