PREP ROUNDUP: Redskins rally past Pirates

September 7, 2011

With the wind to its back in the second half, the Wapakoneta Redskins varsity boys soccer team rallied from a 1-0 deficit to post a 3-1 win over the Bluffton Pirates on Tuesday at Harmon Field.
Bluffton took a 1-0 lead in the 32nd minute on a goal by Lucas Harnish and held that advantage through the rest of the first half.
Colin Mankin put the Redskins on the board with a goal in the 52nd minute.
Travis Bertram scored on an assist from Andy Faller to put Wapak on top 2-1 in the 69th minute. And Cody Benny knocked in the Redskins’ third goal in the 81st minute.

FOOTBALL: Pickens powers Wapak past Elida

September 3, 2011

Connor Pickens shook his head.
“Wow,” he said. “Wow. This is unbelievable.”
Yeah, that pretty much summed it up.
Pickens rushed for a career-high 267 yards, narrowly missing a Wapakoneta single-game record, to lead the Redskins to a commanding 29-18 win over the Elida Bulldogs on Friday night at Harmon Field.
After a tight first half, Wapak’s offensive line took over, creating gaping holes in the Elida defense in the Western Buckeye League opener for both teams.

FOOTBALL: Fort Recovery rallies past Tigers

September 3, 2011

WAYNESFIELD — The heat may have hurt the Fort Recovery Indians at first.
But that didn’t stop them from making a second-half comeback for a 34-30 win over the Waynesfield-Goshen Tigers on Friday night in Waynesfield.
The Indians’ senior work horse, Jason Potkotter, scored the winning touchdown with only 19 seconds left in the game.
W-G started hot and took a 16-6 lead in the first quarter. The Tigers’ junior quarterback Garret Miller threw two touchdown passes in the first quarter and a third in the second quarter to lead W-G at a 30-12 advantage by halftime.

COLUMN: Focus, people. Focus.

Let’s talk football for a few minutes.
X’s and O’s, touchdowns and tackles, passes and punts, handoffs and hits.
And the fact that these are kids — playing a game.
Enough of the gossip and grumbling, rumors and remonstrations, drama and dirt-dishing.
These are kids.
Playing a game.
So let’s talk football.
The Wapakoneta Redskins’ matchup against Elida Bulldogs tonight at Harmon Field has all of the markings of a classic.
Both teams are on the upswing of major turnarounds.

The Wapakoneta Redskins varsity boys soccer team continued the solid start to its season with a 3-0 win over the Elida Bulldogs in the Western Buckeye League opener for both teams Thursday night at Ryan Field.
Junior Travis Bertram scored two goals and senior Andy Faller added a goal and an assist as Wapak upped its record to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in the WBL.

PREP ROUNDUP: Golf teams win; Knippen cards record 38

September 2, 2011

The Wapakoneta Redskins varsity boys golf team defeated the Celina Bulldogs 168-184 in a Western Buckeye League dual match Thursday at the Wapakoneta Country Club.
Wapak’s 168 was its lowest round of the year at home and its first time to break 170.
“When you have two scores in the 30’s and two in the 40’s, the team score will improve,” Wapak coach Ken Wayman said. “We are improving match-to-match. But I still think our best score is yet to come.
“All we need is to have two guys shoot consistently in the low 40’s and we will have a really good score.”

FOOTBALL: Tigers take on Fort Recovery

September 2, 2011

WAYNESFIELD — If the first week is any implications of what is to come in week two, the Waynesfield-Goshen Tigers could be in for another game of offensive highlight reels against Fort Recovery.
The Tigers have taken deep steps with their football program, winning 51 games in the last seven years. However, an often less-than-impressive schedule often left them untested. As a result, the school’s first playoff win in their history has still eluded them despite their regular season success.
About three years ago, the coaching staff began to formulate a plan to take care of that problem.

FOOTBALL: Wapak, Elida battle in key WBL game

September 1, 2011

It wasn’t that long ago that a Wapakoneta/Elida matchup was considered an afterthought in the Western Buckeye League picture.
Not this year. And not this weekend.
After years of being also-rans, Wapak and Elida are now contenders.
The Redskins and the Bulldogs will square off at 7:30 tomorrow night in what is probably the biggest game in Week 1 of the WBL season.
When the question is asked — ‘Can anyone challenge Kenton this year?’ — these are usually the first two names to enter the discussion.
And for good reason.
Gone are the days when Elida was the doormat of the WBL.
