O-G escaped the Wapakoneta High School gymnasium with a 56-50 win Friday in a Western Buckeye League varsity boys basketball contest.

Disqualification costs Wapakoneta league title

January 30, 2014

The Wapakoneta Redskins had the requisite points for a Western Buckeye League girls swimming and diving title Wednesday but were disqualified after a relay race in which they took first place.

Wapakoneta’s 200-yard freestyle relay team finished with a time of 1 minute, 42.46 seconds, which was 33 hundredths of a second ahead of Celina’s quartet.

The event win would have given Wapakoneta 32 points instead of zero, while Celina would have taken 26 points for second in the race.

A top-three finish is what the Wapakoneta Redskins wanted, and a third-place finish is what they got, while Redskins sophomore Charlie Sutton continued a record-breaking season Wednesday.

Wapakoneta placed third Wednesday in the boys Western Buckeye League Swimming and Diving Championships at the Defiance Area YMCA.

Sutton set a new WBL record in the 100-yard freestyle race and broke his own school record in the 200 free.

“I don’t think it gets much better than that,” Redskins coach Mark Law said.

Defiance’s huge surge after halftime was more than enough to secure a 58-42 victory Friday in a Western Buckeye League varsity boys basketball game at Wapakoneta High School.

The end of the Shawnee Indians’ reign atop the Western Buckeye League may come to end Saturday, and the Wapakoneta Redskins would be happy to take their place.

Shawnee has won 13 consecutive WBL girls swimming titles.

“We had pretty much everybody coming back,” Wapakoneta coach Mark Law said. “With what we have back and seeing what other teams lost, we feel the girls had a good shot at winning it this year. Shawnee lost quite a bit.

“I think it will come down between us and Ottawa-Glandorf.”
