WRESTLING: Wapak's Martin gunning for state title

January 23, 2012

How do you describe a second-place finish at one of the toughest tournaments in the state? A tournament in which you finish ahead of two former state runners-up?

Well, if you’re Wapakoneta Redskins junior John “J.T.” Martin, the answer is, “Not good enough.”

That was exactly how the Redskins 106-pounder felt after his result at last week’s Top Gun Tournament at Alliance High School.

“It’s a tough tournament,” Martin said between matches at the Wapakoneta Invitational on Saturday. “It feels good to be successful there. But I got second, so I know I’ve got to work.

BASKETBALL: Bearcats edge Tigers in final seconds

January 23, 2012

SPENCERVILLE — Spencerville’s Jennifer Post layup with just under 10 seconds left on the clock propelled the Bearcats past Waynesfield-Goshen, 55-53, in a non-league confrontation Saturday.

The loss dropped the Tigers to 5-7 on the season. Spencerville improved to 6-7 for the year.

The Tigers did get a last second attempt by Kaylee Patton at the buzzer. But her driving shot towards the basket fell short to overshadow what was a huge game for the sharp-shooting junior who pumped in a game-high 41 points and kept her team in the game with several clutch baskets.

They held a team that had been averaging 64 points a game to a season-low 44.

They kept the Bulldogs from even scoring a field goal in the second quarter.

They led and they led and they led.
