BASKETBALL: Cougars sink 'Skins

February 11, 2012

The Van Wert Cougars started out so fast they nearly left skid marks on the floor of the Wapakoneta High School gymnasium.

Van Wert raced out to an early 24-7 lead, withstood Wapak’s lone rally, and posted a 59-44 win in a Western Buckeye League varsity boys basketball game Friday.

The Cougars hit five of their first six shots and finished the quarter 10-of-15 from the floor, 3-of-3 from three-point range.

BASKETBALL: Rockets hold off Trojans

February 11, 2012

BOTKINS — The Botkins Trojans made several runs.

But Anna proved to be just too much as the Rockets cruised to a 73-61 win in a Shelby County League varsity boys basketball game Friday at Botkins High School.

The Trojans briefly took a 20-18 lead early in the second quarter when Tyler Egbert scored from the paint on back-to back trips down the floor and then connected on the second of a pair of free throws.

BASKETBALL: Wapak downed at the Cougar Den

February 10, 2012

VAN WERT — The Van Wert Cougars used their clear size advantage to cruise to a 54-39 win over the Wapakoneta Redskins in a Western Buckeye League varsity girls basketball game Thursday at Van Wert High School.

The game turned in the second quarter when the Cougars outscored Wapak 16-3 to take a 26-11 lead into the lockerroom.

Van Wert held the Redskins without a field goal for a span of 13:36, starting late in the first quarter and extending into the first five minutes of the third.

BASKETBALL: Wapak to face Van Wert

February 9, 2012

Five weeks ago, after a 61-47 loss to the Bath Wildcats, Wapakoneta Redskins varsity boys basketball coach Matt Bradley challenged his team to ramp up its defensive effort.

Since that time, a span of seven games, the Redskins have given up no more than 55 points in any game.

They went 2-5 over that stretch, one of the toughest on the schedule with quality opponents such as Defiance, Ottawa-Glandorf and Liberty-Benton.

And it won’t get any easier Friday when veteran coach Dave Froelich brings his Van Wert Cougars to town.

BASKETBALL: Redskins rally, fall short to Coldwater

February 8, 2012

COLDWATER — The Wapakoneta Redskins tried to claw their way out of the hole.

Unfortunately, the hole was just a little too deep — two points too deep, in fact.

Wapak rallied with 21 fourth-quarter points but came up just short of a comeback win, falling to the Coldwater Cavaliers 52-50 in a non-league varsity girls basketball game Tuesday night at Coldwater High School.

The loss dropped the Redskins to 10-7 on the season.

In a game of momentum swings, the final Cavs’ swing was too much to overcome.

BOWLING: Wapak, Versailles in battle of unbeatens

February 7, 2012

Two regular games and five Baker games.

That’s all that stands between the Wapakoneta Redskins varsity boys bowling team and an undefeated season.

Well, that and the equally undefeated Versailles Tigers.

Wapak and Versailles head into the final match of the West Ohio High School Bowling Conference season with identical 14-0 records. The Redskins are listed in first place based on total pins this season.

But that won’t matter when the two teams square off at 1 p.m. Saturday at 20th Century Lanes in Lima.

BASKETBALL: Frank leads Tigers to weekend split

February 7, 2012

WAYNESFIELD — Jacob Frank scored 31 in a pair of varsity boys basketball contests over the weekend. But the Waynesfield-Goshen Tigers split the games, both at home, to fall to 6-9 on the season.

W-G lost a tough one to Northwest Central Conference foe Ridgemont as the Golden Gophers came out on top 63-57 on Friday.

With the scored deadlocked at 29-29 at halftime, Ridgemont outscored the Tigers 17-11 in the third quarter to take a six-point lead.

That would be the final margin as W-G battled but came up short of knocking off the 10-5 Golden Gophers in the fourth quarter.

BASKETBALL: L-B tops Wapak

February 6, 2012

FINDLAY — Twenty-four hours after a tip-to-buzzer win over the rival St. Marys Roughriders, the Wapakoneta Redskins varsity boys basketball team found itself on the other end of the scoreboard.

The Liberty-Benton Eagles jumped out to an early lead and rolled to a 55-33 win over the Redskins on Saturday night at Liberty-Benton High School.

Coached by 500-game winner Steve Williman, Liberty-Benton took a 15-6 lead after one quarter and never looked back.

BASKETBALL: Cards clip Trojans

February 6, 2012

BOTKINS — A strong team effort for the New Bremen Cardinals allowed them to travel into Botkins Saturday night and defeat the Trojans 67-48 in a non-league game played at Botkins.

“Our kids really responded tonight,” Cardinals head coach Adam Dougherty said. “It was nice to see the energy they used after the heartbreaking loss we suffered Friday night. I thought we really responded well.”

“Their pressure hurt us a little bit tonight,” Trojans head coach Brent Meyer said. “We also didn’t shoot very well from the floor shooting 29 percent.”

BASKETBALL: Wapak whips St. Marys

February 4, 2012

ST. MARYS — For 16 seconds, the score was tied.
From there on out, it was all Wapak.
The Wapakoneta Redskins rolled to a convincing 60-40 win over the rival St. Marys Roughriders in a Western Buckeye League varsity boys basketball game Friday night at St. Marys High School.
Jake Buzzard’s 3-pointer from the right corner gave the Redskins a 3-0 lead. It was the closest St. Marys would get the rest of the way.
“Any time you can beat your rival on their home floor, in a conference game, good crowd, it feels really good,” Wapak varsity coach Matt Bradley said.
