Wapakoneta 50, New Knoxville 44, final

NEW KNOXVILLE — The Wapakoneta Redskins held off a second half rally by the host New Knoxville Rangers to post a six-point win, 50-44, in a non-league varsity contest Tuesday.

Maddi Stiles had 12 points to lead Wapakoneta (12-3), totaling two 3-pointers with six free throws. Megan Watt had two 3-pointers and tallied 10 points.

Volleyball rule changes in effect for 2015-16 season

INDIANAPOLIS, IN (January 26, 2015) — A new penalty system for an unnecessary delay in starting or resuming play in high school volleyball was approved by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Volleyball Rules Committee at its January 5-7 meeting in Indianapolis.

Bly plays in Florida all-star game

WAYNESFIELD — From the tiny town of Waynesfield to the inside of an NFL stadium, Brandon Bly, a senior at Waynesfield-Goshen High School, recently played in the Blue-Grey All-American Game in Tampa, Fla., at Raymond James Stadium, home of the NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

His teammates and opponents in the game originated from all over the country and included a few notable Division I recruits, some of whom will be playing football at FBS programs such as West Virginia, Maryland, Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech and Illinois.

Morgan's shot gets Wapakoneta past Rangers

NEW KNOXVILLE — The Wapakoneta Redskins are no strangers to games going down to the wire during this 2014-2015 season. The latest win was yet another instance of the Redskins coming through near the end.

Wapakoneta’s Kodi Morgan knocked down a game-winning jumper with 13 seconds left to give the Redskins’ varsity boys basketball team a 45-43 victory at New Knoxville on Tuesday night.

“We’ve played in a lot of close games this year,” Redskins coach Doug Selvey said. “I think those games helped us win this game.”

Redskins dominate Cougars in league dual win

VAN WERT — Only two matches reached the third period, as the Wapakoneta Redskins demolished the Van Wert Cougars, 63-6, in a Western Buckeye League dual match Tuesday at Van Wert High School.

The win put Wapakoneta at 5-0 in WBL dual matches this season.

The match Tuesday came within a grueling schedule for the Redskins.

After a WBL tri-match Thursday which was also in Van Wert, they left immediately for the two-day Top Gun Tournament in Alliance, a more than three-hour trip.

Wapakoneta has another WBL tri-match Thursday in Ottawa.

Redskins rally past Bath for league win

BATH TWP. — Three buckets by Adam Henderson, and a pair of free throws each by Jarrett Koch and Kodi Morgan late in the fourth quarter helped the Wapakoneta Redskins emerge victorious Friday against the Bath Wildcats.

Wapakoneta overcame an eight-point halftime deficit and 23 points by Bath’s Andrew Renner to notch a 50-46 win Friday in a Western Buckeye League varsity boys basketball contest at Bath High School.

The Redskins’ win was their second league victory this season, matching their WBL win total from last season.

Bath beats Wapakoneta, alone atop league

Against a very good team like the Bath Wildkittens, opponents cannot come up short on executing the little things throughout the course of the game. The Wapakoneta Redskins, however, came up short on those facets of the game Thursday, in a matchup of two teams with 3-0 league records.

Madison Dackin poured in 19 points and guided Bath to a commanding 50-34 win over the Redskins in a Western Buckeye League varsity girls basketball game in Wapakoneta.

Botkins' historic gym “The Kitchen” closes for good

BOTKINS — Appetites for competition will no longer be satisfied in “The Kitchen.”

As the Botkins school district commenced session in a new school building this month, a new gymnasium will host the school’s junior high athletic events in a 450-seat capacity facility, replacing the longtime, beloved home of Botkins High School basketball from 1957 until the early 1990s.

Eagles rally in 2nd half, control overtime in win over Wapakoneta

The game Tuesday was a tale of two halves.

The Wapakoneta Redskins led 20-10 at halftime, but a second half rally by the undefeated Liberty-Benton Eagles forced overtime.

The visiting Eagles took complete control in the extra session, holding Wapakoneta scoreless in overtime to land a 44-34 win in varsity girls basketball action Tuesday at Wapakoneta High School.

The Eagles trailed 20-10 at halftime but outscored Wapakoneta by 20 points to earn the non-league win, giving the Redskins their second straight loss to an unbeaten opponent.

Football gives back to local family

January 6, 2015

This past fall a local Wapakoneta family was honored in two separate ways for its contributions to the sport of football — in the state of Michigan.

The sport that they have given so much to gave back last year.

Ryan Zerkel, a 1994 Wapakoneta High School graduate, played football at Adrian College in Adrian, Mich., and now teaches and coaches in the state.

Zerkel finished his third year coaching the St. Clair High School Saints last fall.
