Waynesfield-Goshen falls to Lehman Catholic

WAYNESFIELD — All week, Waynesfield-Goshen head coach Gary Spencer said that Friday's contest with Sidney Lehman would likely come down to how the Tigers strength, matched up against the Cavaliers strength, their defense.

"Something had to give," Spencer said.

It’s homecoming for the Redskins, and Wapakoneta varsity head coach Doug Frye says his boys will have a tougher than usual test Friday night.

“In my time in the Western Buckeye League, 15 years now, this is the best team I’ve seen at Ottawa-Glandorf,” Frye said.

Ottawa-Glandorf has averaged 49.2 points per game on offense and its defense has allowed only 16.6 points per game through the first half of the season.

Wapak blanked: Ewing taken to hospital in loss to St. Marys

ST. MARYS —  The Wapakoneta Redskins suffered two losses in Tuesday’s game against the St. Marys Roughriders.

The ‘Skins lost the game, 4-0, and in a scary moment in the first half, lost their goalie, Matt Ewing to injury.

St. Marys forward Dylan Zink was charging a ball in the box, and Ewing ran toward the ball, attempting to make the save.

Redskins shut out: Girls soccer loses to St. Marys 4-0

WAPAKONETA — The St. Marys Roughriders rode a second-half backwind in route to a 4-0 victory of the Wapakoneta Redskins.

Varsity girls soccer coach Paul Dingledine said that he knew the wind was going to play a factor in the contest, and whichever team had it behind them was playing with an advantage.

Redskins take care of business after lightning delay

A Wapakoneta Redskins senior quarterback-receiver duo answered with a crushing blow of their own each time the Defiance Bulldogs delivered a shot Saturday at Harmon Field .

Wapakoneta senior quarterback Kyle Gibson connected with senior wideout Johnny Crawford on two long touchdowns — one of 60 yards and the second for 35 yards — with each score reclaiming the lead the Redskins surrendered to Defiance.

Wapak finished 3rd in WBL, tournament

It goes without saying that the Redskins wanted to win the WBL tournament. 

But senior golfer Caleb Acheson said if they left the WBL tournament the victors, it would be ‘party time.’

There was no party.

The Redskins tied for second in the regular season, and took third in the WBL tournament, leaving them with a third place finish in the league. 

Regular season champions, Van Wert, also took home first prize Thursday morning.

‘Skins lose to O-G, Titans remain perfect

WAPAKONETA —  “I wouldn’t call it a blow out,” said varsity head coach Marc Dyrness. “But they blew through us.”

Wapakoneta hosted Ottawa-Glandorf Thursday evening in a WBL matchup, and the better team went home the victor.

“They are bigger, faster and stronger,” Dyrness said after the Redskins fell to O-G, 5-0. 

'Skins prepare for 'Dogs

Following last week’s 24-21 loss to the Celina Bulldogs, Wapakoneta Redskins varsity football head coach Doug Frye and his squad are looking to bounce back this week in a home game against the Defiance Bulldogs.

Frye said the Defiance program is strong, and the team is led by long-time veteran Jerry Buti.

“Jerry (Buti) is an exceptional coach, his team plays with great spirit and great toughness,” Fyre said. “We expect to have our hands full Friday night.”

My journey to the finish line

Most of you don’t know me.

I’m the new sports guy at the paper. I’m a graduate of The Ohio State University. I’m an avid sports fan who loves organized sports and Hawaiian Pizza. Most of you still don’t know me.

I hope that changes.

Life is full of journeys, and this story is about two journeys: my journey to the great city of Wapakoneta and my journey to running a triathlon.

Let’s start with my journey to Wapakoneta.

W-G gets first NWCC win against Perry

WAYNESFIELD —  There were long runs, big passes, kickoff returns for touchdowns, fumbles returned for touchdowns, penalties, interceptions, the list goes on and on. And there was still the second half to play yet.

Seriously, in a game that featured plenty of peaks and valleys, and some downright hard-hitting football, it was the Waynesfield-Goshen Tigers who had the bigger bag of tricks in a 42-24 win over Lima Perry Friday.
