BASEBALL: Minster hands Wapak first loss

MINSTER —  On Monday night, undefeated Wapakoneta traveled to take on the 2011 State Champions, the Minster Wildcats.

Phenomenal pitching by both pitchers resulted in an 4-1 Minster win, improving to 4-1 on the season as the Redskins fell to 7-1.

The home team cracked the scoreboard first when Devon Poeppelman reached on base from a walk. He then stole second and advanced to third on a balk by Wapakoneta pitcher, Dom Campos. Adam Niemeyer hit a pop fly to center field to bring home Poeppelman.  

BASEBALL: Pirates pip Tigers in 8 innings

WAYNESFIELD — Coaches say it all the time.

Errors will come back to haunt you.

A seventh-inning error opened the door and the Riverside Pirates barged right through, pulling out a 5-3 win over the Waynesfield-Goshen Tigers in a Northwest Central Conference varsity baseball game Monday at Waynesfield-Goshen High School.

The Tigers held a 3-2 lead and were just three outs from a win when the leadoff Riverside batter reached on an error.  Two outs later, scored on a single to tie the game at 3-all.

SOFTBALL: Riverside no-hits W-G

WAYNESFIELD — Riverside Pirates pitcher Paige Atterholt threw a complete-game no-hitter as the Pirates rolled to a 13-1 five-inning run-rule win over the Waynesfield-Goshen Tigers in the Northwest Central Conference varsity softball opener for both teams Monday at Waynesfield-Goshen High School.

Atterholt struck out 10 batters and walked just two.  The Pirates committed two errors.

Sophomore catcher Josalyn Regendanz scored W-G’s lone run after she drew a one-out walk in the home half of the third inning.

BASEBALL: Redskins 7-0 after first week

After an eight-day, eight-game marathon, the Wapakoneta Redskins are sitting pretty.

Wapak upped its varsity baseball record to a perfect 7-0 with a pair of wins in the Redskin Classic on Saturday at Wapakoneta High School.

The only game in that stretch that didn’t result in a win was Friday’s matchup at Benjamin Logan.  Rain cut that one short with the score tied at 1-1 in the third inning.

TRACK: Wapak 2nd, 4th at Celina Invite

CELINA — The Wapakoneta Redskins varsity boys track team finished second overall at the Celina Invitational on Saturday, while the girls team finished fourth.

The host Bulldogs won both meets.

For the boys, Wapak had winners in the 110-meter hurdles (Ryan Kremer, 16.9), 100 dash (Kevin Kraft, 11.97), 300 hurdles (Kremer, 43.55), Caleb Hennon (800 run, 2:03.01) and 200 dash (Brandon Christler, 23.59).

The Redskins also won the 400 relay with a time of 45.66.  They were third in the 800 relay (1:39.59)

FRIDAY ROUNDUP: Rain's a pain

Rain forced the postponement of the Wapakoneta Redskins’ Western Buckeye League varsity boys tennis opener Friday against the Van Wert Cougars.

It was also the first match for the boys team at the new Rotary Club courts at the high school.

Play was suspended in the middle of the first sets and will be resumed Monday.

The Redskins were coming off a 4-1 loss in their season opener Thursday at Sidney Lehman.

BASEBALL: Indians fell W-G

WAYNESFIELD — Costly errors came back to haunt the Waynesfield-Goshen Tigers as they suffered an 8-2 loss to the Fort Recovery Indians in a six-inning non-league varsity baseball game Friday at Waynesfield-Goshen High School.

Of the Indians’ eight runs, five of them were batters who reached base either on an error or a walk.

The Tigers actually outhit Fort Recovery 9-7.  But W-G couldn’t convert and left 11 runners on base.

The loss dropped W-G to 0-4 on the season.

BASEBALL: 'Skins stop Spartans

Wapakoneta hurler Andrew Hines made his first career varsity start a memorable one.

The Redskin righty scattered three hits over six innings of work to shut down the Lima Senior hitters and propel Wapakoneta past the Spartans 9-1 in a nonleague affair Thursday night.

The Redskins remain unbeaten on the early season at 5-0. Lima Senior remains winless and falls to 0-3.

BASEBALL: Tigers let one get away

NEW KNOXVILLE — Waynesfield-Goshen opened the door and New Knoxville barged right in.

The Rangers scored five runs on one hit, five walks and an error in the bottom of the seventh inning to erase a four-run deficit and pull out a 10-9 win over the Tigers in a non-league varsity baseball game at New Knoxville.

The Rangers had already come from behind once in the game.  They scored four runs in the home half of the sixth inning to erase a 5-1 Waynesfield-Goshen lead and tie the game heading into the seventh.

TRACK: Wapak sweeps tri-meet

The Wapakoneta Redskins boys and girls track teams both won in a tri-meet against Waynesfield-Goshen and St. Henry on Tuesday at Harmon Field.

St. Henry finished second in the boys meet and Waynesfield-Goshen was second for the girls.

For the boys, Wapak’s Ryan Kremer won the 110 hurdles with a time of 17.4 seconds.

Kevin Kraft placed first in the 100 dash at 12.1.

W-G’s team of Cody Baker, Eli O’Leary, Matt Spillman and James Elliot won the 800 relay in 1:40.5.
