The Wapakoneta Redskins captured the high school girls bowling Division I state title Friday.
The Redskins defeated Mentor in the finals, three games to one, in a best-of-five Baker match to clinch the title.
This is the first ever state championship for the Wapakoneta girls bowling program.

COLUMBUS — Wapakoneta Redskins sophomore Landon Hall won his 182-pound championship quarterfinal match Friday morning at the state wrestling tournament.
Hall will wrestle in the championship semifinals Friday evening, having now secured a place of sixth or better at state.
Wapakoneta's other two state qualifiers, Tyler Copeland (132) and Heath Newman (170), each lost their championship semifinal match Friday morning.
All three wrestlers for Wapakoneta competed at the state prelims in Columbus today and are moving on for tomorrow's quarterfinal matches.

Upon taking a commanding 40-20 lead, the St. Marys Roughriders saw their lead reduced to three, 42-39, by the Wapakoneta Redskins midway through the fourth quarter.
The Roughriders were able to hang on after making all 10 free throw attempts the rest of the way to hold off Wapakoneta for a 52-45 win Wednesday in a high school boys basketball Division II district semifinal at Liberty-Benton High School.
St. Marys' Josh Young had 11 points in the first quarter and 18 for the game. Wapakoneta was led by Corey Crawford's 14 points, while Ethan Good added 13.

Eight members of the Wapakoneta High School wrestling team will compete in an exhibition one week from today, as the Lima Area Wrestling Coaches Association is hosting its first ever Dream Team/All-Star Dual.
Tyler Copeland, Dallas Ambos, Dylan Plaugher, Heath Newman, Landon Hall, Brad Beemer, Jayden Hefner and Drew Robenalt will all compete on behalf of the Redskins.
The exhibition will be held at 6 p.m. March 18 at Lima Central Catholic High School, 720 S. Cable Rd., Lima.

Youngstown State senior Heidi Schlegel was named a First-Team All-Horizon League selection for the second straight season, as the all-league rosters were announced Monday.
The 2010 Wapakoneta High School graduate is the fifth player in Penguins women’s basketball history to be first-team all-conference twice in a career.
Schlegel, a Wapakoneta native, finished the regular season ranked third in the Horizon League in scoring and rebounding with per-game averages of 17.9 and 9.6.
PAULDING — The Wapakoneta Redskins managed to hold a one-point halftime lead, 18-17, before the Bath Wildkittens zoomed past the Redskins with a 21-8 advantage in the third period to effectively seal their fifth straight district title.
The Wildkittens tallied a 51-34 win Saturday in a high school girls basketball Division II district final at Paulding High School.
Madison Dackin had 20 points for Bath (23-1), which will face Rogers in a regional semifinal Tuesday.
Megan Watt led Wapakoneta (18-7) with 13 points.

Wapakoneta High School's girls and boys bowling teams qualified for state today after placing first at their respective district tournaments.
The girls will make their state appearance at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Wayne Webb's Columbus Bowl in Columbus.
The boys will make theirs at the same time and place Saturday.\

All seven of Wapakoneta’s district qualifiers are still alive for bids to the state tournament. Four of them are in the championship semifinals after the first day of district action Friday in a Division II tournament at Mansfield Senior High School.
Tyler Copeland, Heath Newman, Landon Hall and Jayden Hefner can qualify for state with at least one win in each of their first two matches today.
Dallas Ambos, Brad Beemer and Dylan Plaugher will begin today’s action in the consolation brackets.
