FOOTBALL: Practice dates set

July 25, 2011

Practice dates have been set for the Wapakoneta Redskins football teams.
Junior High football practice starts Monday, Aug. 1. Players are to meet at the Middle School at 3:30 p.m. If you have any questions call Tom Hunter at (419) 738-8292.
Freshman practice also starts Monday, Aug. 1. Players should meet near the weight room at 10:30 a.m. Any questions, contact Adam Friemering at friead@wapak.org.

NCAA won't hit Ohio State

The NCAA has told Ohio State that it won’t face the most severe charges possible in the memorabilia-for-cash and tattoos scandal that cost football coach Jim Tressel his job.
Investigators said they found no evidence that Ohio State failed to properly monitor its football program or any evidence of a lack of institutional control, according to a letter sent to the university and released Friday.
NCAA investigators also said they have not found any new violations.

GARDNER, Kan. (AP) — High school football coaches are always eager for fall practice to start, and that rings especially true in small towns all across the Midwest, where every store closes up and every light is turned off except for those at the stadium on a Friday night.
Some coaches are even more anxious to get started this season.

SWIMMING: Familar faces lead Waves at WOAL

Take a quick perusal of the top of the time sheets from the 13-14 and 15-over age divisions at the Western Ohio Aquatic League Championships last weekend at Wapakoneta WaterPark and you’re likely to see some familiar names.
You will also see some names that you will likely be hearing a lot in the near future.
Fans of Wapakoneta swimming should be used to hearing names such as Fleagle and Kantner.
Now they can add Miller, Sammons and Sutton to that list.

SWIMMING: Waves sweep 11-12 divisions

The Wapakoneta Waves 11-12 year-olds left their mark on the Western Ohio Aquatic League Championships last weekend at Wapakoneta WaterPark.
They were the Waves’ only age division to take top honors in both the boys and girls standings.
The 11-12 girls dominated, scoring 393 points to just 278 for the second-place Sherwood Sharks. Nine different girls medaled with four of them garnering four or more medals.
In fact, the 11-12 girls accounted for 17 percent of the combined team score for the Waves. They score more points than any other age division for the Waves.

SWIMMING: Youngest Waves get their feet wet at WOAL

For some of the youngest members of the Wapakoneta Waves swimming team, the Western Ohio Aquatic League Championships over the past weekend were their first taste of a major competition.
And they didn’t disappoint.
Wapak finished second overall in the competition to perennial power Westside Wave.
By individual age group, the 8-under boys placed fourth and the 9-10 boys took second. The girls were seventh in the 8-under and fourth in 9-10.
Beating a path to the medal stand on Friday and Saturday were Justin Fleagle and Nate Metzger as both won five medals over the two-day meet.

LOCAL RACING: Schatz wins Doty, Walker wins Royal

Donny Schatz and Tyler Walker came away with the big hardware after the World of Outlaws Sprint Series trip into Northwest Ohio.
Schatz pulled out the win in the Brad Doty Classic on Wednesday at Limaland Motorsports Park in Allentown, and Walker took advantage of Sammy Swindell’s last-turn misfortune to claim the $50,000 winner’s purse in the Kings Royal on Saturday night at Eldora Speedway in Rossburg.

SWIMMING: Waves second at WOAL

The Wapakoneta Waves finished second to powerhouse Westside at the Western Ohio Aquatic League Championships on Saturday at Wapakoneta Waterpark.
Westside entered the second day of the competition with a narrow lead over Wapak and stretched that lead to take the title by a 2,503-2,296.5 margin.
The Sherwood Sharks were third with 2,102.5 points.
Josh Fleagle had a big day for the Waves in the 15-over division.
He snapped his own meet record in the 100-meter freestyle, posting a time of 50.69. He then established another meet record with a 30.14 in the 50 breaststroke.

ACME: Minster takes 1-0 lead in finals

July 15, 2011

ST. HENRY — Minster starting pitcher Austin Knapke had no tomorrow in the best-of-three series to decide a district ACME champion.
Knapke’s pitching and some timely hits have Minster in prime position for a state berth.
Ryan Hoying hit a two-run home run and Knapke frustrated Cavalier batters for six innings in the Wildcats’ 3-1 win over Coldwater in the first game of the ACME district championship series on Thursday night.
Knapke, along younger brother Andrew who started at second base on Thursday, are unavailable for tonight’s action because of a family wedding.
