Wapak's Gonterman plays in state's top all-star game

DAYTON — Kyle Gonterman had a good experience this past week in preparation for football at the college level this coming fall.

The Wapakoneta High School senior took part in the Ohio North-South Classic festivities, which concluded Saturday with an exhibition all-star game hosted by the Ohio High School Football Coaches Association at Welcome Stadium in Dayton.

Gonterman played at center for the South team in the Division I-III game.

Wapakoneta finishes 2nd in Redskin Relays

Hilary Bourne, Emily Klopfenstein and Megan Watt combined to set a new meet record Friday, as the Wapakoneta Redskins competed in the Redskin Relays in high school girls track and field action hosted by Wapakoneta High School at Harmon Field.

All three girls eclipsed 100 feet, as Bourne (113-08) placed second, Klopfenstein (107-9) was fifth and Watt (100-4) finished seventh.

Wapakoneta wins 4th straight WBL game

The Wapakoneta Redskins received production from every level of the batting lineup and were afforded a strong outing on the mound by junior Kodi Morgan to continue their winning ways in Western Buckeye League action, in which Wapak has now won four games in a row.

The Redskins posted a 5-3 win against the Celina Bulldogs in a WBL varsity baseball contest Thursday at Wapakoneta High School.

Wapak opened the scoring with one run in the second inning thanks to the bottom of its lineup.

Botkins rallies past Houston for league win

BOTKINS — Ending a streak of 11 straight scoreless innings, the Botkins Trojans scored twice in the fourth inning to cut into their 3-0 deficit and scored two more in the fifth to take the lead for good at 4-3.

The Trojans added three insurance runs in their final at-bat to land a 7-3 comeback win Monday over the Houston Wildcats in a Shelby County Athletic League contest at Botkins Community Park.

Wapakoneta run-rules New Bremen

NEW BREMEN — Wapakoneta’s junior Adam Henderson ran in from the field between innings with a hamburger on a paper plate he’d just been handed by a group of New Bremen students grilling along the left field line.

“I can’t eat this,” Henderson said, laughing, as he returned to the dugout. Not only was it the last Friday of Lent, Wapakoneta varsity baseball coach Jason Brandt doesn’t allow food in the dugout.

Wapakoneta handles Elida for league win

The Wapakoneta Redskins sent all nine batters in their lineup to the plate in the first inning and started with a 3-0 lead. They slowly but surely built on that strong start, while starting pitcher Chace Culver threw a very strong game against the Elida Bulldogs, as the Redskins recorded a 7-0 win Thursday in a Western Buckeye League varsity baseball game at Wapakoneta High School.

The win was Wapakoneta’s fourth in a row and kept the team one loss behind league leaders Ottawa-Glandorf and Defiance.

Waynesfield's own, Turner, set to lead former school

One of Waynesfield’s own is taking over the Tigers football program, and the hope is the young man can build a successful program for a long time.

The Waynesfield-Goshen school board approved hiring 25-year-old Tyler Turner as the new head varsity football coach for Waynesfield-Goshen High School.

Turner, who played football for the Tigers, is a 2006 graduate from W-G.

Turner also played baseball and did powerlifting while in high school. He attended Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, for college.

Redskins demolish Spartans in sweep

The Wapakoneta Redskins used a pair of eight-run innings as part of two wins by run-rule Saturday against the Lima Senior Spartans in a non-league varsity baseball doubleheader at Wapakoneta High School.

The Redskins posted eight runs in the fourth inning in Game 1 in a 15-5 victory in five innings.

Wapakoneta junior Adam Henderson smashed a two-run homer in the fourth inning of the first game.

Wapakoneta outlasts Shawnee in 9 innings

The only walk of the game was basically intentional. It loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, put the Wapakoneta Redskins’ best hitter Renee Lovett on base and brought a struggling Redskins sophomore Sierra Sammons to the plate.

Sammons, who was 0 for 4 until that point, sliced a grounder to shortstop which was bobbled, allowing Bridgitte Weaks to score from third, giving Wapakoneta a 2-1 win Friday in nine innings over the Shawnee Indians in a Western Buckeye League varsity softball contest.

Redskins score 7 unanswered in win over Shawnee

Despite being the visiting team on their home field, a patient Wapakoneta Redskins team rallied for a 7-2 victory Friday over the Shawnee Indians in a Western Buckeye League varsity baseball contest held at Wapakoneta High School.

The game was supposed to be held at Shawnee High School but was moved due to wet field conditions.

Wapakoneta starting pitcher Kodi Morgan dueled with Shawnee starting pitcher Zach Peake but, in the end, Morgan picked up the win en route to a complete game.
