BELLEFONTAINE — The new era of Wapakoneta Redskins football will unfold Friday as the team plays its first regular season game under first-year head coach Travis Moyer, against the Bellefontaine Cheiftains.

After a 9-2 record in the 2013 season, which ended in the school hosting its first ever home playoff game, the Redskins completed the best four-year stretch in program history under Doug Frye, who returned to coach St. Marys.

Moyer will face 10 unfamiliar opponents during the regular season, with Bellefontaine first in line to take on the Redskins.

WAYNESFIELD — Last season, the Waynesfield-Goshen varsity football team opened their season with just two seniors, on the road against a veteran-laden Jefferson Wildcats squad.

The result was a 48-3 beatdown at the hands of the Wildcats when senior Austin Jettinghoff threw 7 of 8 for 138 yards and four touchdowns for Jefferson at Stadium Park in Delphos.

This season has a different feel to it, however, as the Tigers will host the Wildcats on Friday night to open the 2014 season.

The Wapakoneta Redskins overcame a rocky start to their scrimmage Saturday but settled down to show some positive outcomes, as Wapakoneta topped the Minster Wildcats, 21-14, in three quarters of football.

Quarterbacks were not subject to live tackling in Friday’s scrimmage, as officials’ whistles often blew with the QBs sitting in the pocket or scrambling for yardage.

Kicks and punts were allowed but blocking and tackling on returns were not.

RAWSON — The 2013 season was a big disappointment for the Waynesfield-Goshen varsity football team.

The Tigers finished 2-8 overall and 2-4 in the Northwest Central Conference, however at Cory-Rawson High School on Friday, W-G showed improvement and talent along with some techniques that need some ironing out.

“Overall, we need to clean up our performance, but we are coming together nicely,” said Tigers coach Tyler Turner.
