Wapakoneta looks to keep St. Marys winless

Doug Frye can be counted as one who is surprised the St. Marys Roughriders are still winless this season.

The fourth-year Wapakoneta Redskins varsity football coach says his former team is much better this season than last season’s 0-10 St. Marys squad.

“This is a good football team,” Frye said of St. Marys. “Easily this team could have three or four wins at this point in the season.

Five Redskins named all-league selections

The Wapakoneta Redskins had five All-Western Buckeye League selections for the 2013 season, as the WBL released its boys soccer rosters Wednesday.

Wapak junior Sam Hinegardner and freshman Alex Lause each appeared on the WBL’s first team for 2013.

Hinegardner was a second-team choice last season as a junior.

Along with Lause, four other Wapak players appeared on the all-league roster for the first time in 2013.

Wapakoneta puts 5 on league teams

The Wapakoneta Redskins had five all-league performers for the 2013 season, as the Western Buckeye League released its girls soccer rosters Wednesday.

Wapak senior Sara Warner was a first-team All-WBL selection for the first time this season.

Warner was a repeat all-league performer in 2013 after earning second-team honors last season and honorable mention in 2011.

Redskins sophomore Brianna Pequignot was a second-team all-league choice this season.

Wapakoneta's Schneider lone league selection

Karli Schneider was the lone Wapakoneta Redskins volleyball player to earn an All-Western Buckeye League selection for the 2013 season, as the WBL released the all-league rosters Wednesday.

Schneider, a senior, was honorable mention for the Redskins.

This was Schneider’s first selection to an all-league team.

Wapakoneta went 1-8 in WBL play this season.

Celina’s Michaela Wenning was the Player of the Year in the WBL.

Tigers done in tournament, lose to Ada

ELIDA — The longer Tuesday’s match wore on, the wider the margin on the scoreboard grew, as the Ada Bulldogs pulled away from the Waynesfield-Goshen Tigers in three sets Tuesday in their 3-1 win in a Division IV Northwest District volleyball sectional semifinal at Elida High School.

The Bulldogs won the match Tuesday with scores of 25-18, 25-13 and 25-11.

Ada topped W-G in a best-of-three match Aug. 31, winning 25-17, 25-16.

Wapakoneta retains top spot in region

The Wapakoneta Redskins retained the top spot in their region Tuesday as the Ohio High School Athletic Association released the weekly edition of the prep football computer ratings.

Wapakoneta (6-1) appeared first in Division III, Region 10, for the first time Oct. 8.

Wapakoneta is moving closer toward clinching a home playoff game this season.

The top eight teams in each region for Divisions II through VII will qualify for the playoffs, while the top 16 teams in Division I will make the playoffs.

Three W-G players earn all-conference

Three members of the Waynesfield-Goshen Tigers varsity volleyball team appeared on the All-Northwest Central Conference rosters, which were released Tuesday by the NWCC.

Tigers sophomore Kiersten Wilcox made the conference’s second team as a setter.

W-G juniors Abbie Van Horn and Taylor Van Horn were honorable mention selections. Abbie Van Horn was an honorable mention All-NWCC selection last season.

The Tigers finished the NWCC season with a 2-4 record.

W-G seeking varsity baseball, softball coaches

Waynesfield-Goshen High School is seeking applicants for the following positions: head varsity baseball coach and head varsity softball coach.

Bath beats Wapakoneta in 2nd meeting

The Bath Wildcats were the only team the Wapakoneta Redskins faced twice this season, and Wapakoneta did not fare well in either contest.

Bath eliminated Wapakoneta from the postseason Monday with a 1-0 win at Ryan Field, the Redskins’ home venue, in a Division II Northwest District boys soccer sectional semifinal.

Wapakoneta debuts in AP poll

The Wapakoneta Redskins debuted in the Ohio high school football poll Monday, a weekly ranking of the state’s top teams as voted upon by media members.

Wapakoneta (6-1) earned 15 points and was ranked 16th overall  Monday in Division III.

Teams receiving at least 12 points appear in the poll after the voting.

The Redskins have won five straight games after a 1-1 start, which included a loss to Kenton, the No. 1 team in Division IV.
