W-G runs past Shawnee in season opener

The Waynesfield-Goshen Tigers, with two freshmen making huge impacts, ran past the Shawnee Indians on Friday to notch a win in their season opener.

W-G operated a solid transition offense throughout its 78-57 win Friday in the first day of varsity girls basketball action.

In their high school hoops debuts, point guard Emily Patton had 35 points while center Alicia Kessler recorded a double-double with 17 points and 13 rebounds.

Patton’s performance included two 3-pointers, five assists and three steals.

Wapakoneta gets 12 players on all-district teams

The Wapakoneta Redskins had 12 players selected to the Division III All-Northwest District football teams for the 2013 season.

The all-district teams for all divisions were released Thursday.

Wapak had three first-team selections, senior offensive lineman Kyle Gonterman, senior running back Zach Schmerge and junior defensive end Thomas Schoenlein.

Redskins crack all-time records leaderboard

Members of the 2013 Wapakoneta Redskins football team appeared in the top five of varying school records upon the conclusion of the season earlier this month.

Two different players set a total of three new schools records.

Senior linebacker Zach Schmerge set a new Wapak mark for most career fumble recoveries with eight, while junior defensive end Thomas Schoenlein owns the school’s career records for most tackles for loss, 47, and most sacks, 15.

Redskins set 3 new individual, team records

Two players on the Wapakoneta Redskins varsity football team  now own three different school records, while the team set three new school records during the 2013 season.

Senior linebacker Zach Schmerge broke the school record for most fumble recoveries in a career by totaling eight upon the conclusion of the 2013 season.

Schmerge had six entering his senior year and recorded two in the playoff game against Shawnee to exceed the previous record of seven held by Brandon Miller.

Redskins notch win over Blackhawks in debut

The Wapakoneta Redskins notched a win in their first match of the 2013-14 high school bowling season Saturday.

Wapak managed a 2,485-1,905 win over the Mississinawa Valley Blackhawks in West Ohio High School Bowling Conference boys action at Plaza Lanes in Celina.

Austin Krites had the team high for the day, with a 202 in the first game. He followed that up with a 169 in the second game for a 185.5 average.

Wapakoneta tallies win over Flyers in opener

The Wapakoneta Redskins recorded a season-opening win Saturday over the Marion Local Flyers.
Wapak tallied a 1,478-1,172 victory at Plaza Lanes in Celina to begin the West Ohio High School Bowling Conference girls season.

After a 763-552 win in the first game, Wapak's margin of victory was much closer in the second, 715-620.

Kylie Timmerman was the 'Skins top bowler in the first game with a 182, while Britni Hosterman rolled a 185 in the second game to lead the team.

Wapakoneta trio earns individual league awards

Wapakoneta Redskins seniors Bailey Hinegardner, Kyle Gonterman and Zach Schmerge each earned one of the five Western Western Buckeye League individual awards for the 2013 varsity football season, the WBL announced Thursday along with releasing its all-league selections.

Hinegardner was named Kicking Specialist of the Year, Gonterman was named WBL Offensive Lineman of the Year and Schmerge was named Offensive Back of the Year.

Hinegardner had the most individual kicking points in the WBL.

Harmon Field to host 2 more playoff games

Harmon Field in Wapakoneta will be the site of at least two more playoffs games this fall after having hosted the town’s Redskins this past Friday.

The stadium will be a neutral site for a pair of postseason games, one Friday and one Saturday, as Convoy Crestivew (9-2) and Ada (8-3) will meet there at 7:30 p.m. Friday in a Division VI, Region 20 semifinal, while North Lewisburg Triad (11-0) and Sidney Lehman Catholic (10-1) will kick off at 7 p.m. Saturday in a Division VII, Region 26 semifinal.

Wapak falls shorts in OT loss to Shawnee

Kodi Morgan scrambled to extend the play and the Redskins’ season. Nearing the goal line, the Wapakoneta Redskins quarterback managed an attempt which just barely dropped from his hand, as did the Redskins’ chance to extend the game and their season.

The Redskins were 3 yards short after Morgan’s scramble on a 4th-and-goal, on what proved to be the final play of a 41-34 overtime loss to the Springfield Shawnee Braves.

Wapakoneta's Warner, Kantner earn district honors

Wapakoneta Redskins senior Sara Warner and varsity coach Ross Kantner each were honored by the Northwest Ohio Scholastic Soccer Coaches Association, as the NWOSSCA released its annual all-district awards and scholarship winners Thursday.

Warner earned a spot on the district’s first team in Division II for her performance during the 2013 season.

She was one of six players from Western Buckeye League schools to be a first-team selection in Division II.

Warner was named a first-team All-WBL selection last month.
