The Botkins girls soccer team opened its season Tuesday with a 1-1 tie in a home game against Benjamin Logan.
“At this time last year we were 0-1 so we are off to a better start,” said Botkins varsity head coach Joe Welker.
Both teams scored their lone goals in the first half. Whitney Bornhorst garnered an assist with a pass to Natalie Ambos for the Trojans’ only goal.
Botkins battled for a scoreless second half. The Trojans made several threats in the second half but were unable to convert.

The Botkins Trojans lost their regular season opener Tuesday in four games to the Temple Christian Pioneers, by scores of 25-23, 22-25, 17-25 and 16-25, in a non-league varsity volleyball match in Lima.
Allison Guckes paced the Trojans with 32 digs.
Jocelyn Counts had 14 assists for Botkins.
Denise Schwartz led Botkins in kills with eight. Rachelle Maurer, Sami Vehorn and Taylor Doseck had six kills each.
The loss dropped Botkins to 0-1 overall.
The Wapakoneta Redskins opened Western Buckeye League play with a 167-181 win over the Kenton Wildcats on Monday in a varsity boys golf match at the Wapakoneta Country Club, in Wapak’s home opener for the 2013 season.
Wapak junior Drew Wayman was the match medalist Monday with a 1-under-par round of 35 for nine holes.
The Wapakoneta Redskins began the Western Buckeye League portion of their schedule Monday and recorded a 4-1 win over the Kenton Wildcats in a varsity girls tennis match in Kenton.
Kenton’s lone match win came at first singles Monday, with Claire Oats defeating Kaitlin Snider, 6-2, 7-5, giving Snider her first loss of the season.

The Wapakoneta Redskins grabbed their second straight win Monday with a 3-0 victory over the Fort Jennings Musketeers in a non-league varsity girls soccer contest in Fort Jennings.
The Redskins emerged from a scoreless first half to post three second-half goals, as Kylee Dahman scored on a pass from Dana Bodine, Mackenzie Custer notched her third goal of the season from Lilli Schaub and Brittany Pequignot scored on an assist from Sara Warner.
Waynesfield-Goshen continued to show consistent improvement Monday, but it wasn’t enough as the team suffered a 175-230 setback to Indian Lake in varsity girls golf action at the Cherokee Hills Country Club in Bellefontaine.
The Tigers’ score was the fourth time they set a school record in five outings this year, besting their previous mark of 230. However, Indian Lake also shattered a school record with its score.

The Botkins Trojans topped the Lehman Catholic Cavaliers, 178-192, in varsity boys golf action Monday at Shelby Oaks Golf Course in Sidney.
Roger Miller and Seth Hanna each paced Botkins with nine-hole rounds of 42. Josh Miller (46) and Alex Roberts (48) rounded out the Trojans’ scoring.
Lehman Catholic’s top score was also a 42, shot by Mitchell Shroyer.
Sam Dean followed for the Cavaliers with a 44. Zack Scott (52) and Bryce Eck (54) finished Lehman Catholic’s scoring.
FINDLAY — The Wapakoneta Redskins received their first sense of an opposing force Saturday in their scrimmage of the 2013 season, as Wapak traveled to Findlay on Saturday morning to scrimmage against the Findlay Trojans and the Tiffin Columbian Tornadoes.
The Redskins scored two touchdowns against Columbian and allowed one touchdown to each team in the live down-and-distance session in the latter half of the scrimmage Saturday.
Wapak varsity coach Doug Frye graded his team’s performance Saturday.
Wapakoneta native Brian Garman returned to the mound Sunday for the first time since June 22.
He started Sunday’s game for the Arizona Rookie League Brewers and pitched one scoreless inning.
“I felt pretty good,” Garman said. “As far as getting to the point where I was before I got hurt, I just need to see more hitters.
“I’m pretty comfortable physically. I’m not concerned,” he said. “I just need more repetitions off the mound.”
