Able to avoid an afternoon storm in the area, the Wapakoneta Redskins focused on their match against the Shawnee Indians and came away with a 191-196 win Wednesday in varsity girls golf action at Oak’s Golf Club in Lima.
Wapak senior Shelby Kohler was Wednesday’s match medalist with a nine-hole score of 43.
“Shelby continues to be our steady leader,” Wapak varsity coach Dawn West said. “She is playing very consistently and being a great leader for us.”
Tuesday’s match proved to be a night of firsts for Wapakoneta.
For the first time in school history, the Wapakoneta Redskins varsity boys soccer team saddled the Kalida Wildcats with a loss.
In his debut as the Redskins varsity boys soccer coach, Keith Rambin left Ryan Field on Tuesday with a win.

Wapakoneta Redskins freshman Allie Zofkie won the girls race in the Auglaize County Invitational on Tuesday, as she had the winning time of 20 minutes, 23.48 seconds on the course at the new St. Marys High School. The Redskins’ Dylan Plaugher finished second with an time of 18:06.29.
The Wapakoneta boys team was second with 43 points Tuesday. Wapak’s girls team finished third with 53 points.
After a see-saw first game, the Wapakoneta Redskins could not topple the Bellefontaine Chieftains on Tuesday in varsity volleyball action in the season opener at home.
The two teams battled throughout the first game until the Chieftains put it away 25-21. The second game followed the first until Bellefontaine took control and pulled away with a 25-17 win. They then dominated the third game, 25-14, to sweep the match 3-0 in Redskins varsity volleyball coach Amy Ruppert’s first game directing the program.
The Botkins Trojans finished as the runner-up out of nine schools Tuesday in the Shelby County Preview in varsity boys cross country action at Anna Elementary School.
Botkins girls team was third overall out of six full teams Tuesday.
Botkins junior Austin Jones took third in the meet and was the top runner among Shelby County Athletic League teams.
“He ran a great race,” Botkins varsity coach Ryan Gutman said. “He worked hard all summer long. It was neat to see him run the way he did.”

On their home course for the second straight day, the Wapakoneta Redskins boys golf team squeezed out a tight win, 172-174, over the Greenville Big Green in varsity action at the Wapakoneta Country Club.
Drew Wayman and Bobby Crow each shot 41 to lead the Redskins. Nick Bruns and Jared Miller carded 45 each to finish Wapak’s scoring. Ryan Hunlock shot a 46 and Alex Gossard had a 48.
The Botkins girls soccer team opened its season Tuesday with a 1-1 tie in a home game against Benjamin Logan.
“At this time last year we were 0-1 so we are off to a better start,” said Botkins varsity head coach Joe Welker.
Both teams scored their lone goals in the first half. Whitney Bornhorst garnered an assist with a pass to Natalie Ambos for the Trojans’ only goal.
Botkins battled for a scoreless second half. The Trojans made several threats in the second half but were unable to convert.

The Botkins Trojans lost their regular season opener Tuesday in four games to the Temple Christian Pioneers, by scores of 25-23, 22-25, 17-25 and 16-25, in a non-league varsity volleyball match in Lima.
Allison Guckes paced the Trojans with 32 digs.
Jocelyn Counts had 14 assists for Botkins.
Denise Schwartz led Botkins in kills with eight. Rachelle Maurer, Sami Vehorn and Taylor Doseck had six kills each.
The loss dropped Botkins to 0-1 overall.
The Wapakoneta Redskins opened Western Buckeye League play with a 167-181 win over the Kenton Wildcats on Monday in a varsity boys golf match at the Wapakoneta Country Club, in Wapak’s home opener for the 2013 season.
Wapak junior Drew Wayman was the match medalist Monday with a 1-under-par round of 35 for nine holes.
The Wapakoneta Redskins began the Western Buckeye League portion of their schedule Monday and recorded a 4-1 win over the Kenton Wildcats in a varsity girls tennis match in Kenton.
Kenton’s lone match win came at first singles Monday, with Claire Oats defeating Kaitlin Snider, 6-2, 7-5, giving Snider her first loss of the season.
