'Skins, Selvey lands 1st win in victory over Minster

After giving up the lead briefly to start the second half, the Wapakoneta Redskins quickly rebounded and closed out the Minster Wildcats in a tight ball game Saturday, giving first-year coach Doug Selvey his first win with the Redskins.

After leading virtually the entire first half, Wapak quickly regained the lead and held onto it the rest of the game in a 53-48 victory Saturday over Minster in the Wapakoneta High School gymnasium.

Wapakoneta notches league win over Kenton

A strong start in the fourth period by the Wapakoneta Redskins allowed them to pull away Thursday for a victory over the Kenton Wildcats.

Leading by nine, 42-33, entering the final period, the Redskins quickly pushed their lead to 15 in less than 2 minutes and to 20 points another 2 minutes later.

The result was a 62-43 win in a Western Buckeye League varsity girls basketball contest in the Wapakoneta High School gymnasium.

OHSAA board approves 8 ballot items

Missing an expected petition to separate tournaments between public and non-public schools, the Ohio High School Athletic Association Board of Directors approved eight referendum items to be placed on next May’s ballot.

The deadline to submit any petition to place a proposal was Monday, Dec. 2, and so for at least until the spring of 2015, no such competitive balance proposal will be up for vote among OHSAA member schools.

Wapakoneta rally falls short against Allen East

HARROD — The Allen East Mustangs seemed to have figured out the Wapakoneta Redskins defense and relied upon it to sustain a lead nearly the entire second half Tuesday.

After falling behind by eight, 26-18, midway through the second quarter, a 17-3 run before halftime gave the Mustangs a six-point lead, 35-29, at halftime.

They surrendered a 10-point second half lead inside the three minutes left in the game but managed to came away with the win, 62-60, in a non-league varsity girls basketball game Tuesday at Allen East High School.

Wapakoneta loses to Lakers, beat Tigers

The Wapakoneta Redskins split a pair of non-league matches Tuesday in varsity wrestling action at Indian Lake High School.

The Redskins lost to the host Lakers, 40-23, and defeated the Versailles Tigers, 40-31.

Tyler Copeland (126 pounds) and Jarred Carpenter (285) each recorded pins for Wapak in the match against Indian Lake.

Landon Hall (182) and David Duncan (220) each earned wins by decision against the Lakers.

Micah Fyffe (195) had the Redskins’ other win against Indian Lake in a forfeit.

New Bremen runs past banged up Botkins

BOTKINS — With an 11-4 start, the New Bremen Cardinals team were able to run the floor and eventually defeat the Botkins Trojans, 60-33, Monday evening in a non-league varsity girls basketball game played at Botkins High School.

“Getting out to a fast start was one of the things we talked about,” Cardinals varsity coach Chris Burden said. “The last two road games we didn’t get off to very good starts, but especially on the road it is critical to get off to a good start and we did that tonight.”

Redskins win 31-team Columbus tournament

The Wapakoneta Redskins recorded a major accomplishment Saturday, winning the boys portion of the 10th Annual Ohio High School Invitational Kick-Off Classic Tournament in Columbus.

Wapak bested a field of 31 teams Saturday, including some fellow members of the West Ohio High School Bowling Conference.

With a score of 3,088, the Redskins finished tied for 11th in the standings after the qualifying round, which consisted of three games and two Baker games.

Wapak then joined a 16-team bracket, seeded 11th overall.

Redskins survive Shawnee rally to win WBL opener

SHAWNEE — The Wapakoneta Redskins twice had to survive after surrendering two large leads, once in each half, but they led virtually the entire game and prevailed in the end.

The Redskins managed a 65-60 win Thursday over the Shawnee Indians in varsity girls basketball action, in the Western Buckeye League opener for both teams.

Wapak’s final points of the third period at 1:19 gave the team a game-high 19-point lead, 51-32.

Wapakoneta trio earns All-Ohio honors

Three members of the Wapakoneta Redskins varsity football team were named All-Ohio for the 2013 season, as the Division III and Division IV teams were announced Tuesday.

Wapakoneta senior Kyle Gonterman was a second-team all-state choice on the offensive line.

Gonterman was named the Western Buckeye League’s Offensive Lineman of the Year last month. He helped guide the Redskins’ offense to a school-record 39.4 points per game in the 2013 season.

Lima Senior keeps Wapakoneta from 1st win

LIMA — On top of dealing with the tenacious defensive pressure they faced Tuesday, the Wapakoneta Redskins also witnessed the Lima Senior Spartans hit outside shots consistently to keep distance on the scoreboard.

The Redskins went with a zone defense as long as they could Tuesday against a quick, athletic Spartans team, which had as much ease getting to the basket as it did finding open perimeter looks.

Lima Senior defeated Wapakoneta, 57-41, in a non-league varsity boys basketball contest in the Lima Senior High School gymnasium.
