Bath rallies to beat Redskins in 4 games

After securing a first game win, Wapakoneta Redskin varsity volleyball coach Amy Ruppert felt her team had finally shaken off the “albatross around their neck,” but the Bath Wildkittens battled back Thursday in the second game and took the last two in convincing fashion.

Bulldogs blank Wapakoneta, 5-0, in WBL game

The Wapakoneta Redskins were blanked 5-0 by the defending Western Buckeye League champion Celina Bulldogs on Thursday in varsity girls soccer action in Celina.

The Bulldogs led 2-0 after 6 minutes and 10 seconds of game action, on goals from Caelyn Reineke and Jenna Berry. Elyssa Sheriff added another in the first half to give Celina a 3-0 halftime lead.

Emily Jackson and Holli Brackman each scored in the second half for the Bulldogs.

Celina had 13 shots on goal, while Wapak notched five.

Wapakoneta edges St. Marys, 171-177, in WBL match

The Wapakoneta Redskins went unbeaten in home league matches this season, as they concluded the home portion of their Western Buckeye League schedule Thursday with a 171-177 win over the St. Marys Roughriders at the Wapakoneta Country Club.

Wapak went 4-0 in league matches in 2013.

Bobby Crow led Wapak with a nine-hole score of 40 on Thursday.

Crow has shot a 40 in four straight matches.

Drew Wayman followed Crow with a 41. Ryan Hunlock (44) and Nick Bruns (46) rounded out Wapak’s scoring.

Botkins routs Houston by 55 in SCAL finale

The Botkins Trojans finished the Shelby County Athletic League part of their schedule with their fifth consecutive win in league play and eighth overall after a 170-225 victory Thursday over the Houston Wildcats at Shelby Oaks Golf Course in Sidney.

Botkins ended SCAL matches with a 5-1 record, improving to 11-1 overall.

Nick Okuley and Roger Miller each shot a 41 to lead Botkins. Seth Hanna and Spencer Stutsman each followed with a 44.

Anrton Wehrman was the lowest scorer for Houston at 47.

Fairlawn outlasts Botkins to win SCAL match in 5

The Botkins Trojans nearly found their first win in Shelby County Athletic League play Thursday but were defeated in a close five-game match against the Fairlawn Jets in Sidney.

Fairlawn emerged victorious with scores of 26-24, 24-26, 17-25, 25-18 and 18-16.

Their loss kept the Trojans winless in SCAL matches, as they dropped to 2-8 overall and 0-5 in the SCAL.

Denise Schwartz paced Botkins with 15 kills Thursday. Rachelle Maurer and Sami Vehorn added 11 kills each.

W-G sweeps Perry in NWCC match

The Waynesfield-Goshen Tigers climbed over the .500 mark in conference play Thursday with a 3-0 sweep of the winless Perry Commodores in Northwest Central Conference varsity volleyball play in Lima.

The Tigers won Thursday by scores of 25-12, 25-18 and 25-18.

With the win, W-G moved to 2-8 overall and to 2-1 in NWCC matches.

“We played well tonight and played like a team,” W-G varsity coach Caitlin Klima said Thursday.

Lehman Catholic beats Trojans, 1-0, on late goal

The Botkins Trojans lost Thursday on a game-winning kick by Lehman Catholic’s Rocco Catanzarite in the 77th minute, breaking a scoreless 0-0 tie.

The Lehman Catholic Cavaliers held on in the final minutes to emerge with a 1-0 win.

Botkins goalkeeper Christian Hoskins saved a penalty kick 10 minutes into the second half to keep the game scoreless.

The Trojans fell to 2-4-2 overall this season.

Botkins will resume its season Tuesday with a non-league road match against the Cory-Rawson Hornets.

Wapakoneta varsity football coach Doug Frye was tempted to throw away the game film from last Friday against Kenton but he couldn’t follow through on it.

“Even though I did think about throwing that film away, we’re a young enough football team that we need every opportunity to learn,” Frye said.

Wapakoneta ties Bath, 1-1, in heat

After trips to Lima on back to back days, the Wapakoneta Redskins will travel anywhere to find scoring opportunities right now.

On a day featuring intense heat, the Redskins tied the Bath Wildcats, 1-1, on Wednesday in a resumed game that was suspended Tuesday due to lightning.

Tuesday’s game was suspended at 22:31 left in the first half with Wapak leading 1-0.

The Wapakoneta Redskins won their closest match of the season Tuesday, managing a 3-2 win over the Lima Central Catholic Thunderbirds in a non-league varsity girls tennis match at the Collett Street Courts in Lima.

Wapak’s win Monday maintained the team’s undefeated record, which is now 11-0.

The Redskins won all three singles matches Tuesday, while LCC won both doubles matches each in three sets.
