W-G squanders chances against USV in 22-16 loss

WAYNESFIELD — The first half seemed to be downhill as usual for the Waynesfield-Goshen football team. In the second half, however, it seemed like somebody finally flicked on the switch to the 2013 football season.

The Tigers had plenty of second half heroics but fell just short of producing their first win in a 22-16 loss to the Upper Scioto Valley Rams in a Northwest Central Conference varsity football game Friday, the NWCC opener for both teams.

Wapakoneta places 5th in WBL tournament

The Wapakoneta Redskins placed fifth overall in the Western Buckeye League boys golf tournament Friday at Shawnee Country Club in Lima.

With its fifth-place effort, combined with its second-place during the regular season in match play, Wapak finished fourth overall in the final WBL standings for the 2013 season.

Wapakoneta beats Allen East, 2-1, in non-league

The Wapakoneta Redskins scored three goals Thursday but one was on an own goal late in their 2-1 win over the Allen East Mustangs in non-league varsity girls soccer action.

The two teams played to a scoreless first half before Wapak tallied two straight goals to take the lead for good in the second half.

Wapak varsity coach Ross Kantner described adjustments his team needed to make to break through on the scoreboard.

'Skins prevail in tri-match against Shawnee, Russia

The Wapakoneta Redskins managed two wins in their home finale Thursday, as seniors Shelby Kohler and Zoe Rayburn played in their final varsity event at the Wapakoneta Country Club.

Wapak shot 210, while the Russia Raiders scored 213 and the Shawnee Indians tallied 232 in varsity girls golf action Thursday.

The win made Wapak’s season record 11-5 overall in match play.

Kohler led the Redskins with a 47 one day after winning the Western Buckeye League quad match in Defiance.

Botkins places 3rd in SCAL tournament

The Botkins Trojans placed third in the Shelby County Athletic League boys golf tournament Thursday with a score of 368.

Roger Miller was Botkins’ lowest scorer Thursday with an 88.

Completing the scoring for the Trojans were Nick Okuley (92), Josh Miller (93) and Seth Hanna (95).

The tournament Thursday was Botkins’ final event before sectionals begin next week.

Botkins ties Anna, 1-1, in non-league match

The Botkins Trojans tied with the Anna Rockets, 1-1, in a varsity girls soccer match Thursday in Botkins.

Carly Harshbarger scored Botkins’ lone goal in the first half on an assist by Natalie Ambos.

Anna tied the game with a goal in the second half.

Botkins goalkeeper Keirstyn Rogers tallied six saves.

Michaela Cramer had 14 steals to lead the Trojans, while Brooke Bornhorst added 10.

Botkins moved to 1-6-3 on the season.

Russia tops Botkins, 3-0, in SCAL match

The Botkins Trojans were defeated in four games Thursday by the Russia Raiders in a Shelby County Athletic League varsity volleyball match in Botkins to begin the second half of league play.

Thursday’s match scores were 25-12, 25-13, 23-25 and 25-10.

The loss put Botkins at 4-9 overall and 1-6 in the SCAL.

Rachelle Maurer notched eight kills to lead Botkins.

Allison Guckes posted 24 digs for the Trojans.

Jocelyn Counts added 10 assists for Botkins.

Redskins to play 1st road game against winless Bath

On Friday, the Wapakoneta Redskins will face a winless Bath Wildcats team that is constant in some ways and dynamic in others.

“Through the years, they’re a very physical, well-coached team. That has never changed,” Wapak varsity coach Doug Frye said. “Coach (Bill) Garland has done a great job with getting these kids on track. They’ve got a lot of youngsters out there. They continue to get better each week. They’re hard-nosed kids is what jumps out at me.”

Wapak handles Findlay, 4-1, in non-league match

The Wapakoneta Redskins remained unbeaten Wednesday with a 4-1 win over the Findlay Trojans in non-league varsity girls tennis action at the Wapakoneta Rotary Courts.

Wapak improved to 14-0 overall with Wednesday’s win.

Playing for the first time this season in the first singles slot, Wapak’s Allie Zofkie defeated Findlay’s Savannah Hosey, 6-1, 7-5, in a matchup of two freshmen.

Wapak’s usual first singles player, Kaitlin Snider, earned a 6-2, 6-0, win over Camryn Hessling at second doubles.

Wapakoneta's Kohler wins WBL match; Redskins 2nd

Wapakoneta senior Shelby Kohler found herself at the top of the leaderboard Wednesday in a tournament among the four Western Buckeye League schools sponsoring girls golf.

With just four schools hosting the sports, the WBL does not sanction girls golf as a varsity sport and therefore does not have a league championship.

Kohler shot an 89 to lead all players Wednesday at Eagle Rock Golf Club in Defiance, while she and the Redskins were second overall with a team score of 410.
