History was made Monday on the Rotary Courts at Wapakoneta High School.
The Wapakoneta Redskins varsity girls tennis team completed their first ever unbeaten season in Western Buckeye League matches, as their 5-0 win Monday over Van Wert in the WBL finale moved the Redskins’ league record to 9-0, clinching the WBL regular season title.
Wapak had previously outright won (at 7-0 in 1980 and 1981) or tied for the WBL regular season title but never with a 9-0 record.
A promise fulfilled in the second half gave the Wapakoneta Redskins an important 2-1 win Monday over the Celina Bulldogs in Western Buckeye League varsity boys soccer action at Ryan Field.
The loss was Celina’s first of the season in WBL play.
Wapak varsity coach Keith Rambin explained his halftime promise.
“I made the promise at halftime: I told the players that if they start possessing the ball, they’ll get more shots,” Rambin said.
The Redskins did just so.
The Wapakoneta Redskins ended their Western Buckeye League schedule Monday with a 159-181 win over the Van Wert Cougars at Hickory Sticks Golf Course in Van Wert.
The win moved Wapak to 7-2 overall in the WBL, good for second place, and gave Wapak a three-match win streak in WBL play.
Wapakoneta senior Shelby Kohler shot a season-low for nine holes Monday in her team’s 189-197 win Monday against the Celina Bulldogs at Fox’s Den Golf Course in Celina.
Kohler parred the last five holes en route to a 39, earning match medalist honors.
“Shelby had a great night,” Wapak varsity coach Dawn West said Monday. “She was in control of her swing the entire round even on the holes she made bogey. She has really been a great leader for our team this season.”
