Piqua rolls Wapakoneta in season opener

PIQUA — The Wapakoneta Redskins had strong starts to each half Friday, showing flashes of potential, but neither time were they able to sustain their level of play in the first game of coach Doug Selvey’s tenure.

The Piqua Indians rolled to a 71-41 win Friday over Wapakoneta at Piqua High School’s Garbry Gymnasium in a non-league varsity boys basketball contest, on the first day of the 2013-14 regular season.

Winter sports tournament sectionals being finalized

Sectional tournament sites for 2013-14 winter sports are beginning to be finalized for Ohio High School Athletic Association postseason competition, as the Northwest District Athletic Board has posted dates and sites for its tournaments.

The Wapakoneta boys basketball team will play in a Division II sectional Feb. 25 and 28 at Lima Senior High School, joined by Bath, Celina, Elida, Shawnee and St. Marys.

Wapak ranks 2nd in WBL standings after fall season

The Wapakoneta Redskins are ranked second in the Western Buckeye League all sports standings after the fall season, which were posted Tuesday on the Western Buckeye League website.

The Redskins have 54 points behind league leader Celina’s 64.5.

Wapakoneta’s lone fall WBL title came from the girls tennis team, which went 9-0 in WBL matches.

The football team was runner-up in the league with an 8-1 record, while Kenton was the WBL champion at 9-0.

Trojans beat Wapakoneta in season opener

The Wapakoneta Redskins were swept by the Findlay Trojans on Tuesday at the University of Findlay, in the season opener for high school swimming and diving.

Findlay won the girls meet, 102-78, and the boys meet, 132-52.

Recording a first-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly was Wapakoneta senior Taylor Law, who finished with a time of 1 minute, 8.17 seconds to score six points.

Taylor Hager won the 100 yard butterfly in a time of 1:08.17 and took second in the 50 yard free with a time of 29.25.

Harmon Field set to host 2 state semifinals

Harmon Field in Wapakoneta will host two more playoff games this weekend, making it six total for the fall of 2013.

The site will feature a Division VI state semifinal between Mechanicsburg (11-2) and Haviland Wayne Trace (12-1) at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Friday’s game will be Mechanicsburg second straight playoff game at Harmon Field.

Warner, Wapakoneta start fast in debut win

Sara Warner and the rest of the Wapakoneta Redskins just kept shooting Friday, and those shots just kept going in.

The Redskins used a torrid start in the first period Friday to establish a comfortable lead the rest of the game, as Wapak recorded a 67-40 non-league win over the Bellefontaine Cheiftains in the first regular contest of the varsity girls basketball season for both teams.

Botkins gets past Pirates in season opener

The Botkins Trojans played Friday’s game on a roller coaster, starting at the top in the first half before falling briefly in the third period only to get back to the top.

The Trojans eventually regained their focus and sealed a 49-30 win over the Riverside Pirates in a non-league varsity girls basketball contest in DeGraff.

Botkins opened Friday’s game with a 12-1 first period lead and extended its margin to 19 with a 13-5 advantage in the second period, to lead 25-6 at halftime.

W-G runs past Shawnee in season opener

The Waynesfield-Goshen Tigers, with two freshmen making huge impacts, ran past the Shawnee Indians on Friday to notch a win in their season opener.

W-G operated a solid transition offense throughout its 78-57 win Friday in the first day of varsity girls basketball action.

In their high school hoops debuts, point guard Emily Patton had 35 points while center Alicia Kessler recorded a double-double with 17 points and 13 rebounds.

Patton’s performance included two 3-pointers, five assists and three steals.

Wapakoneta gets 12 players on all-district teams

The Wapakoneta Redskins had 12 players selected to the Division III All-Northwest District football teams for the 2013 season.

The all-district teams for all divisions were released Thursday.

Wapak had three first-team selections, senior offensive lineman Kyle Gonterman, senior running back Zach Schmerge and junior defensive end Thomas Schoenlein.

Redskins crack all-time records leaderboard

Members of the 2013 Wapakoneta Redskins football team appeared in the top five of varying school records upon the conclusion of the season earlier this month.

Two different players set a total of three new schools records.

Senior linebacker Zach Schmerge set a new Wapak mark for most career fumble recoveries with eight, while junior defensive end Thomas Schoenlein owns the school’s career records for most tackles for loss, 47, and most sacks, 15.
